L2 Cache enabling software for 770, and DVD-rom issues

#1 Post by Norway Pad » Fri Nov 29, 2013 12:59 pm

Hello guys

I just installed Win2K on my 770Z, so I need to find the L2 Cache enabling software. I bought this laptop with a PIII 850MHz processor, and I understand that the L2 Cache here isn't enabled during boot to prevent an error. Later iit must be re-enabled by software in the OS. I never saw any signs of anything happening when I booted into the XP install that came with it, so I assume this was software that was set to run at startup. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to any msconfig entry, so I don't know what it was. I could refit the XP drive, but lots of hassle, and the links to the software on the older pages are dead anyway. I would prefer if it requires no user interaction.

Any help appreciated!

I am not sure if the next piece of information is any use. It's probably a known upgrade, as the 770Z has been around for so long. Anyway, the DVD-rom that came with the 770Z had problems reading any Win2K or XP install cds I tried. It only read a Vista one.. I got errors from files that didn't load, or it refused to read the cds at all. Out of curiosity I opened up the DVD-rom, and realized that the actual drive inside the plastic box was identical to the Ultrabay drives from my T30. So I ordered a T30 DVD/CD-RW drive on eBay, and transplanted that into the 770 drive box. A direct fit, with the 770 front bezel and everything. After doing that, Win2K installed just fine.

Software is here, helped once again thanks to users on this forum. I assume that the filename for the executable: "PLeapCCP_V5_1_0_0_1.exe" is the Powerleap utility that is described in the general 770 update-thread. Anyway, I get an error while trying to install it, so something isn't working. I have to choose from "upgrades" in a message box, and then the install fails in the next step, so I am assuming something happens here.

Edit 2: I have now read through a dozen of posts, and deep inside the forum, there is a post that describes the exact same error as I get: http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopi ... 63&start=0. The lesson learned, seems to be that the PowerLeap CPU Control Panel can do more than just re enabling the L2 Cache. So I am looking for a copy of the Cache Configuration tool, which does all I need. All links I have found to it are dead, so it would be greatly appreciated if someone has a copy to send. I even put the XP drive back in to check, and I got a confirmation that the PowerLeap Cache Configuration Tool is what's used there too.

Thanks!
