Got a nice 760ED...

#1 Post by jack_zhan » Tue Dec 31, 2013 4:58 am

Hello folks! Quite some time since my last visit...so much college application works :(
But now with the EA offer from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Computer Science major, I can happily return to my beloved thinkpads now :D

I have just got a nice 9546-U9A 760ED with most original modules! Well, talking about most...here is a change list:

RAM 16MB-->32MB (one card, still original IBM part!)
OS is a clean boot diskette version of Windows 95. That is, just a COMMAND.COM on the hard disk.

All other things are the same as what twbook.pdf would tell you. And the battery pack still holds charge! :D

The case has moderate scratches, but quite fair for such an old thinkpad. The surfaces still have a nice touch and don't feel sticky. All covers are still there. Pics on request.

Now the first task is to get this 760ED an OS. But from what I found on the Internet, its CD-ROM drive won't boot. So it seems getting the hard disk out is necessary. But how? Is this brick containing the hard drive another caddy thing? Any tips on opening it?

Good luck. I've gotten a 701C and 755CE that has those odd clamshell tough caddies.

Great job on getting that college offer. I'd say that would be easier than opening the caddy.

Finally I managed to open the caddy. Mine still has the original IBM sticker so I had to cut the sticker in parts to get the cover off. To my surprise the HDD inside is a 12.7mm IDE... so I cannot just put it in my 600E to install an OS and must go get a IDE-USB connector. :?

btw I thought 701C has a open caddy like a frame and my 701C has one... much better than those clamshells...
