Even when doing the BIOS update off CDR, you still have to make the floppy first - you can't go directly from spsdin36.exe to CDROM. Here's the steps, as I understand them:
1. Create the BIOS update floppy (insert a floppy into the drive and run spsdin36.exe). If your thinkpad doesn't have a floppy drive, you'll have to take spsdin36.exe to a machine that does.
2. Create a bootable CDROM, using the floppy from step 1 as the source image.
3. Boot the thinkpad off of the CDROM and run the update.

P.S. The page from which you downloaded spsdin36.exe has a link to a page with instructions for creating the floppy (step 1 above).

i managed to do the bios, i have windows xp pro installed i cannot hear any audio when i try to play mp3' or cd's i can hear the beeps when it boots etc but thats it. i got this error when i tried to play an mp3 with wmp
-cannot play the file because there maybe a problem with your sound or video device, try installing a new device driver, in device manager sound/properties the crystal codecs are there. i disable infrared device in device manager as read on this forum made no diffence, what can i try.
im starting to think the audio chip is dead ie the - Crystal SoundFusion integrated audio - 600e beeps when booted thats it dont know what to try

I seem to remember something about using XP's own drivers for the sound card on one of the ThinkPad models - may have been the 600 series, but I'm not 100% sure.
Try uninstalling all the sound drivers, and letting Windows use its own stuff for it.
If that doesn't work, perhaps one of the more knowledgeable folks around here can help more...

i tried pgup+fn makes no difference when i triedto play an mp3 file with wmp eror comes up saying cant play file etc problem with sound or video device, in control panel/ sounds and audio devices it says no audio device
