Upgrading Original 600

#1 Post by Retro67 » Tue May 17, 2005 1:17 pm

I have just aquired an original Thinkpad 600 with one 64K memory stick.
Total memory in the machine is 96K

I have a few questions, if anyone could take the time to answer, I would greatly appreciate it. thank you in advance.

1) Will installing the newest (2001) Bios let me install more memory than the 160K max?

2) are their special memory sticks i must use for the original 600? i have heard there are memory sticks that will not work in the original 600.

3) Is there ANY way to upgrade the 266 processor in this box?

please let me know your thoughts....all comments are appreciated.
thanks!!

You can upgrade to latest BIOS according to your ThinkPad 600 type.
After upgrading, you can install over 40GB harddisk.

As for the memory, you can choose 2 128MB PC66, PC100 or PC133 SDRAM. Some SDRAM cannot work on 600/E/X, as usual, I recommend HY or KingSton brand.

You can upgrade MMC1 366 (400 is a bit expensive) CPU. $40USD each on ebay.

Hope these can hope.

Hi...thanks for the reply.

So, you are saying I can add TWO 128 mg modules to an original 600? i thought the max was ONE 128 module?

Also the processor is upgradeable? Really? I thought I would have to change the entire systems board...is that true?

thanks,

Mike

You can add 2*128MB on 600. Changing to 600E motherboard is also an option, but suggest you to upgrade to MMC2 P3-500 CPU if you have higher requirement.

You can add two 128MB PC66 sticks for a MAX of 288MB.

You can swap the existing PII 266MHz MMC1 module for another PII module up to a 400MHz, although those are relatively rare and expensive. PII 366MHz MMC1 modules are available on eBay for as little as $20.

Get the HMM here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... WIK-3SYPX2 which contains detailed instructions on how to remove and install the CPU.

The MMC1 366 in auction can fit in your ThinkPad 600. If you need the installtion manual, please send me email to syp(at)hotmail.fr. (the manual is made by myself, about 1.5MB)
