240X ideas

#1 Post by Qing Dao » Mon Sep 15, 2014 9:11 am

I found a 240X for about $7 shipped to my house. Not sure if it powers on, but I was thinking of what to do with it when I get my hands on it in. I was thinking of some way to make it useful and it turns out that an iPad retina display wouldn't be very hard to shoe-horn into the case. The only problem then would be what internals to give it. It would need the motherboard of some netbook that can fit inside there and has a displayport output. I already have a 12" Asus netbook's motherboard that I think I could modify to fit, but it only has single-channel LVDS, VGA, and HDMI video outputs. I've also thought that it could possibly simply house an iPad's internals, but then it would only run iOS and I worry about being able to wire the keyboard and trackpoint up to it.

Are you aware that a 10.4" 1024x768 screen was made for the i Series 1124 and some models of the 240Z? If you can find such a panel and the cable that accompanies it, this would be much easier than upgrading to the iPad's 9.7" screen.

I still miss my i Series 1124 very much. It's easily my favorite Thinkpad of all time.

I saw your post awhile back, it sound like a great machine, maybe not now in today's web/media standards... who cares! :D
I've been rummaging through eBay to see if I could find that gem out of all the iSeries they have there.
No dice. Heck I'd be happy to see an 800 series for scrap prices!

Regarding a keyboard for the iPad, an M4-1 would be too wide.

A 240x is a wonderful old school machine.

Why would you want to rip it's heart out and replace it with something "fake"?

These machines have souls.

On your place i would keep it, that is a very rare classic and would be a sin to vandalize it in my opinion... :(

I have 240 and 240x and keep them in sealed Pelican cases with locks :) Batteries removed of course...
