Lost boot password - Clock gets reset

#1 Post by agarny » Tue May 24, 2005 11:59 am

Hi, I have a ThinkPad 770X that I thought I would try to revive. I however noticed that the internal clock got reset and even I set it, it will get reset the next time I boot up the computer. Any idea as to what it could be due? Internal battery?

More important though is that the system has a boot password and that I cannot remember it. Any idea as how to overcome that problem?

Cheers, Alan.

Are any changes that you make to the BIOS lost when you reboot? If yes, then yes, the battery on the system board needs to be replaced.

As for your power on password woes (boot password) this site has many steps on trying to reset it, as well as a utility you can try.

Hope this helps!

I am asked for a password before I can even access the BIOS, so I am stuck in that respect.

Otherwise, I had a look at the website and unfortunately it didn't help. Well, I will keep investigating...

Thanks though...

If it is just the BIOS password then the instructions are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual, which can be downloaded from the IBM support site. That same manual also has instructions for replacing the CMOS battery.

If you cannot remember the password then count on a new motherboard.
(that seems to always be my solution)
