I've a 600x 2645-9ZU which is running with 512mbRAM plus m-board RAM memory... it has the following ultrabay dvd rom drive....

Toshiba 6xDVD model SD-C2302
IBM FRU P/N 27L8373 ASM P/N 27L8372

stamped dates on the bottom:
ROM Version 1617
Date of mfg: Aug,2000
Rev 201

from win2000 dev mgr the driver is from Microsoft dated 11/14/1999
ver 5.0.2183.1 signed by M$ Windows 2000 publisher

driver details show:

QUESTIONS:
- Is there a firmware update for this drive? If so, where can I get it from?

- Are there updated drivers for this device?? if so, where can I get them from?

- I can read and play store bought dvd-R movies, no problem BUT I cannot read self-burned/copied dvd-R movies or data... any way to fix this ?? maybe a firmware update??

This is the biggest issue... I can't read dvd's that have been burned on another drive (movies or data)... but I can read storebought/rented movies ok...

If I could get the drive to read ANY burned/copied dvd-R movie or data I would be very happy...

- I cannot read dvd+R data discs but I expect to never be able to do so...does anyone think otherwise about this ???

Check here for information about your drive. http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage/I ... el=SDC2302 It should be able to read DVD-R discs and store bought (-ROM) discs okay. It will not read or play +R discs unless you do "bit-setting" and burn +R discs as -ROM (possible with some burners, namely Liteon and NEC). I looked around and didn't find any new firmware for your drive unless you want patched RPC1 (region-free) firmware, but I don't think that's what you are really after here. In regards to Drivers, all CD and DVD drives use Windows drivers and there is no need for downloading drivers...unless you want to have DOS drivers loaded for your drive to work outside of windows.

If I burn a -R disc with data, it cannot be read in the drive...

If I copy a -R rented movie disc it reads ok...

It seems that the only disc I can read is original or copied -R movie discs...

My burner is a sony dvd RW DRU-710A
My burning and copying s/w varies

I think my problem is the spec which says "DVD-R (read, single border);"
whatever single border is my burning s/w doesn't burn that way...for example, single border could be single extent and when I burn data folders they burn as multiple extents.

I would think it's how you finalize the disc....2 basic ways....disc at once or file at once. You might experiment with either way, but make sure its finalized before you put it in your laptop. I have a few DVDroms for older Thinkpads...one's 4x (yours is better at 6X) but burned correctly, the -R data disc is recognized fine. Copy of DVD movie, depending on your burning software is finalized automatically for best compatibility. At least that's how RecordNow works for me. You'll just have to go in and tweek the settings for regular data discs (in RecordNow, DVD's are also considered "data" discs.).
