ThinkPad 240 Update(watch out, it have many big pictures)

I have a second hand Thinkpad 240, this is my second laptop and first thinkpad. My first laptop is a Toshiba 1800-400.
As we know 240 is a very old laptop, so I have try to improve it.
The first is update memory, 240 have 440bx motherboard, so it can use 256M memory(240z and 240x only can have max 256M memory, in japan they have 192M memory for sell)
I got Kingmax TingBGA MSGB63s-68KX3.

*i think it is possible to change that 64M memory which is on motherboard to 128M. in japan, they have 2 models 240 have 128M memory on motherboard, so we can try change it, but it is a hard job

240 and 240x only have 56k modem, some 240z have rj45 port. but 240's mini pci slot is smaller than normal one, so we need find tiny mini pci card for. There were some people cut pcb board to install their big mini pci card for 240(they are creay, but they are successful).
but i am lucky, i found a little mini pci wireless card for my 240, the size is suitable for 240. and it is a 802.11g wifi card

the last thing is over clock.
if you have a C300 240, that means you are lucky, you will get chance overclock it to 450Mhz, another word is you can get a 240x with 320M memory
but my one is 400Mhz, it can't do it. there are some people have sucessful overclock it in China and japan.

as we know, 240's cpu's FSb is 66Mhz. 240 use Crypress's W137 chip control FSB.
the thing you need to do is cut 16pin, and link it with 28pin(VDD), it will change FSB to 100Mhz, and now,if you boot your 240, you should be find the cpu run at 450Mhz

and in China some people overclock 400Mhz cpu to 500Mhz and 450Mzh. but he take that W137 chip out of mother, and use another W83194R-39A chip to control FSB.

he was sucessful set FSB at 75Mhz and 83Mhz, and cpu run at 450Mhz and 500Mhz. he set fsb at 75Mhz and sdram at 75Mhz as well, it pass Super Pi 30Million test

if you are lucky find a 240z LCD, some 240z have XGA LCD(1024*768)
you can install it on your 240, but i don't think that is possible to find it.

that impossible
because there are only 8 memory chips on 240 motherboard, and each memory chip must be no more than 16M(this is 440BX limited)
so max 16M * 8= 128M on mother board
total 384M in theory

Thanks for this tip. I am contemplating doing it! Has anyone tried? Is it safe? Would it cause the CPU to overheat? Will I need to add a fan or something?

No, not really. That 450MHz CPU is still a Celeron, but it's a Coppermine Celeron with Katmai SSE instructions, compared to a Mendocino (Deschute based) Celeron. The 240Z as I remembered it are Coppermine ULV 600MHz machines. Pity that they are hampered by their 440MX chipsets.

As for the overclocking and the MiniPCI, here are some general comments:

Monkung discussed the 240 overclock, and although my mastery of Japanese is rather sketchy (I am Chinese, but I can guess the meaning from a Babelfish translation and the Kanji reading), he did warn that some Celerons will take to overclocking well, and some will not. He also mentioned that the electricals inside the 240 does not have that much leeway in terms of pushing it off the limits. I think he completely borked a 300MHz model when he did the experimentations. In short, don't do it...considering that 400MHz Celeron boards are readily available on eBay for $40 or less.

As for the MiniPCI...oh, I had some experience doing the modification work, as 2 of my 3 Thinkpad 240s have been subjected to my "franklenlap" treatment. The basic idea? Run the X series antennas around the display bezel, pinch it through the rather fragile LCD cable connector, and then plug it onto the MiniPCI slot card.

Cards that I have had success with:

Dell Intel Pro Wireless 2200 B/G card (iw2200bg)
Xterasys XG600 PrismGT
IBM Trimode Wireless MiniPCI adapter (Atheros AR5004X based)

Basically, the clearance will be tight, but it should work fine.

I am also experimenting with the X22 series Modem/Wireless combo card to regain the modem capabilities on that slot.
