While browsing Amazon, I stumbled upon this battery, which might well be perfect for a
Transnote:

It looks like it's the right shape, voltage, capacity and chemistry. Only thing that looks wrong is the connector. At $7, I think it's worth giving it a try though, hmm...

How hard can it be to cut the wires (one at a time, please) from old and new batteries and swap/reconnect the connectors?

In my case, no old battery (or connector) was present, and I don't seem to have any in my stash of junk. But swapping the connectors (assuming one of the proper flavor was available)... walk in the park.

Would soldering the pin be insane or too difficult?
