In relation to a little project, I'm working with installing a newer 14.1" LCD inside a 770 lid. The current LCD / bezel seems to be the 13.3" ones, and I was hoping that a 14.1" LCD would fit inside this lid if I modified the hinge rails and got a 14.1" bezel. But when I try to line up the 14.1" LCD inside the lid, it seems like the screw attachments where the hinges and bezel gets connected to the lid will be in the way, and it doesn't even seem to be sufficient room for an inverter below it.
So it makes me wonder: are there any significant differences between a 13.3" and a 14.1" 770 unit? Or did IBM just move the screw attachments, inverter and hinge rails around to utilize the space inside the lid to its very maximum? I'm aware that there are different part numbers for the lid parts according to LCD size, but I have a hard time seeing how the 14.1" panel can fit inside this form factor at all.
If someone happens to have a 14.1" 770 in parts; is it possible that you could take a high resolution picture so I can see exactly what the inside of the lid and the hinges look like? The dimensions of the 770's 14.1" panel could also be helpful. Don't feel obliged to pop your collectible 770's LCD bezel off for this. Only if you already have one in parts. And if you happen to have a spare 14.1" lid, with hinges and no LCD, maybe it will be easier for me to just buy that than trying to retrofit this panel.
Thanks in advance.

I guess we both have a sweet spot for the 770 series
For starters, have a look on this post of mine from the past and by the end of next week I will be able to spare some time and look into my stash if I can find that 14.1 screen... Others can correct me if I'm wrong but I am afraid it's not 13.3 but 13.7, so the differences of the lids are minute

Re: Inside of Thinkpad 770 14.1" lid
The 770 is one of my favorites, definitely. In addition to the 600X.
My project-770 is actually a 13.3. That seems to be a LCD size that was offered for the 770 only, along with the 14.1. Later the 13.7 SXGA option was added.
And thanks for the picture, this confirms the difference. The 770Z in my signature is a 13.7, and then we have the even bigger 14.1 option. I have never seen one in real life, but I can see that the edges of the LCD bezel get even thinner. The 13.3 has a significantly wider edge on the left hand side. I have a 14.1 bezel on its way from an eBay purchase, so I will be able to tell more then. It would still be good to know the exact dimensions of the 770 14.1" LCD panel so I can see if something is different size-wise about the 14.1 panel I try to install. But at this point I assume a complete 14.1 lid will be the way to go for me

Re: Inside of Thinkpad 770 14.1" lid
And it turns out that it doesn't.Norway Pad wrote:..I have a hard time seeing how the 14.1" panel can fit inside this form factor at all.
Today I decided to sit down and take the 770Z 13.7" out of its box to do a comparison of the position of the screw holes in the 770Z LCD bezel and the 770 LCD bezel. And then I realized that the 770Z lid is *bigger* than the 770.. They have the same width, but the 770Z is apprx. 1/2" taller. This is done by letting the front of the casing and lid angle forward, which allows for the taller lid. Unfortunately this makes it impossible to install a lid like this on the 770. I assume this bigger form factor is used for the 14.1" versions too, which explains how the 14.1" panel can leave sufficient room for the bezel lower edge, hinges/hinge covers and the inverter. Which it won't do in the 13.3" lid; a fact that confused me there for a while. So the one operation I assumed would be very straight forward turned out to create a lot of hassle for me.
Since the 770 I have is in such decent condition, and I have already started working on it, the best option right now will probably be to source a 13" LCD panel of some kind instead. I could of course use the 13.3" panel that's already there, but since I'm free to use whichever panel I want, I would like something newer and with a better resolution. Unless someone has a decent looking, non-functional 14.1" 770 unit they can sell me.
(Btw, anyone know about a decent, newer, generic 4:3, even 16:10, 13 - 13.3" LCD panel with SXGA resolution? There aren't many to find. Suggestions on PM are welcome)
