Thinkpad 770ED - Battery & Internet

#1 Post by imranvp » Wed Jul 01, 2015 8:15 pm

Dear Guys,

I just ordered a vintage 770ED from eBay. It came without a battery.

Do any of you know where can I order the best quality OEM battery for this particular model?

Secondly, I wanna know how to get this baby up online either via ethernet or wifi. What are the best solutions for these if anyone can guide me I'd really appreciate it.

Looking forward to hearing from you'll at the earliest.

Greetings from Dubai :)

- Imran

Hi and welcome to the forum. Congratulations with your purchase. I have never neither had a working 770 battery, nor purchased one, but I have seen NOS and used batteries on eBay. I would however be careful and not have too high expectations from any of those, as all these batteries are 15 years and older by now.

You don't tell us which OS you are using, so internet access depends a little on that. I run Win2K and WinXP Pro (SP2) on my 770Z, and with both these OS I use a WLAN card in a PCMCIA (CardBus) slot. That has worked flawlessly. Be aware that neither of these OSs are supported anymore, and XP will be sloow on a 266MHz PII computer. It runs ok on the 770Z with PIII, but nothing more.

For extended use, you also might want to consider Linux. I haven't tried that on the 770, but I have had good experiences with Linux Antix on 600, 560 and 390-series machines. There will most likely be an issue with the sound not working, but otherwise everything works out of the box. WLAN included.

If you are still interested, there are some batteries available on Google Shopping. https://www.google.com/#q=thinkpad+770z ... y&tbm=shop

Beware, they are not cheap...in the ballpark of $100 for the cheapest and nearly $200 for the most expensive.

That is a given, and to be expected for a model long out of production. It's just the law of supply and demand.
