I am staging a 810MB HDD from scratch trying to cobble together the factory build. The last time I did this was about 1999 or 2000.
I can't find my notes, does anyone remember which windows ini file is edited to point to the correct pen driver after windows for pen computing 1.0 is installed. I remember all the files are available, it just wasn't documented.

There used to be a little instruction sheet for version 1.0, but all I can find is the beta 2.0 for Win95

Things like PenDOS are there and works fine, but the fresh 6.3 install puts all the pen files under c:\dos\system and the factory install of the 360PE had it under C:\pendos

I think PC-DOS 7 has the last pendos 2.2, but I have to dig through file images. ..... maybe that is where the read.me was, in 7....

I'm still looking, but I just realized all my files for the 360PE are from 1998, including the twbook. The 770E and 770ED aren't in it because they were still for sale directly from IBM!

Almost 4TB of files to slog through. I found the note for the system.ini edit. The text file was from the MWfP SDK. Now I just need to find the correct driver.

Admin, the readme file is about 400 lines long. Would you want me to upload it for anyone else interested?

Also of note, I have 2 versions of Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing 1.0. One has no drivers the other has drivers. Then I've got the SDK files for the mouse driver used to test apps.

I think I remember what goes where now. Let me test really quick and I'll post the results. You have to add the drivers manually.
Either MS-DOS or PC-DOS doesn't matter. MWfPC 1.0 or MWfPC 1.0a can be used.

Just to close out this post, it turns out I have the 730TE drivers, not the 360PE. On the upside, I now remember how MWfPC 1.0 get's configured and have the mouse working.

The drivers off the IBM BBS were for OS/2 and PenDOS v1.0. PC-DOS 6.3 comes with PenDOS 2.0 and the drivers already.

Also keep in mind that MWfPC 1.0 only works with VGA drivers. Don't bother with the video features diskette if you want to use the pen in Win311.

With the exception of device drivers (and demo), the 701C preload is almost the same as the 360PE, so I installed that. corrected the video and sound configuration and added the utilities for the 360. Then I installed MWfPC 1.0, and PenDOS 2.0 (configuring the mouse to work in windows of course).

Now all I need are IBM750P.DRV and IBM750P.386 (or whatever they are named) and I'll be good to go.

I have a 360PE (with a screen that's bizarrely distorted but still usable).

Its HDD seems to have the factory installation with PenDOS and all of the drivers and stuff. Do you need me to crack it open and extract the data off?

(The Windows install has some sort of problems as it BSODs after a few minutes, but all of the weird proprietary files are there). If you have a copy of PenDOS I wouldn't mind an exchange of some of these files (and archiving them in the event anyone else needs them). Of course we probably can't host it publicly, but that's fine.

I'm working on an out of state project at the moment and won't be able to dig through my library for a couple of months.

Getting anything off the unit is going to be difficult. I have a 750Cs with the factory install. I had to use LapLink to get it onto a Win98 system with USB drivers to transfer as a whole into a VM for my library.

Okay I'll get to uploading the file(s) in the meantime.

Difficult? I was just going to remove the HDD and plug it into my 'swiss army knife' of computers which has desktop IDE, laptop IDE, 68-pin SCSI, SATA and every other interface under the sun. That way I can copy any file out individually.

I have plenty of Windows 9x machines if any of them are needed as well.

If you don't mind taking the IDE drive out of the caddy.

At a minimum I'm looking for 2-3 files.

Their names will be in these files:

c:\windows\system.ini

This may or may not exist
c:\windows\penwin.ini

The files default location would be c:\windows\system

Could be named anything and might even be the same 750P drivers (the same driver is used in PenDOS for the 750P/360P/PE)

It's unknown if IBM supplied a custom VGA driver so we need to compare it to the default from the Microsoft SDK

OK. I bought a 360P that had part of the factory install on the drive. The back light is going out, but I don't really care since I now have ThinkWrite and the working pen configuration. I just won't be able to transfer anything off the drive for a few months while I'm traveling for work.

The configuration files for MWfPC 1.0 are different than I expected.

I'll try to see how far I can get documenting the configuration before the screen fails.

If anyone had placed any bets, the driver names turned out to be IBM360P.DRV

For whatever it's worth, I've used IsoBuster to create images of hard disks I connect via USB-IDE interface adapters in .bin format, then Win32 Disk Imager to write the image to the new disk. I've been able to make and restore backup images of several hard disks from older models (755C, 701C) with factory loads on them this way.

I'm still a couple of months from being at home and having access to the systems needed to transfer everything off the hard disk, but I thought I would share a little about what I've found so far.

The IBM electronic version of the 360P User's Guide is on the drive.
Disk factory seems to be an early version.
Windows 3.1; Pen for Windows 1.02 (IBM OEM); and ThinkWrite 1.21 are there, but are single archive files.
Win31 is a 8MB PVL file
Pen102 is 2.9MB
TWR121 is 1.9MB

The configuration files for Disk factory seem to tell the software how many bytes to write to each disk before asking for a new floppy.
I'm thinking this may be one reason that the 360P WfP drivers and ThinkWrite have never been seen on the internet for 22 years before now.

When I get home, I plan on backing up the drive first, put the drive in a system with known good parts then I'll create the diskettes.
From there, 1.44MB floppy images can be made for VM's or for other collectors to restore their 360P/PE

Also of note, there is a IBM 360P specific video driver, otherwise you have to use the 16 color VGA Microsoft driver for pen.

I'm home. I put the drive in the good 360PE I have. The pen drivers work fine, so it confirms it is just the CPU that is different. I am using disk factory to make the diskettes. Let me do a test install to make sure they work before I make images.

I had to make a clean install of Windows 3.1, but everything worked. I installed Wfp first and rebooted (there was a missing 'MUDD' error), then installed ThinkWrite (the error went away).

I'll hopefully be able to get back to making images this next weekend.

Just to update, I created the 1.44MB floppy images using VMware workstation and tested installing in a VM as well as recreating the physical disks using RaWrite3 or diskcopy and a USB floppy drive in a VM.

I'm trying to find out the forum's stance regarding this particular software being made available.
