ThinkPad 600 PII 266mhz Ram Hack

I've recently found out that I actually have a low-density 256mb pc133 SDRAM in my T23 and I replaced it with a high-density and took the low-density into the original 600 without ACPI made in '98. I put it into the 2nd slot (Not the slot where you can see the optical drive) and it worked fine. Now I wonder how I am able to put a 128mb pc100/pc133 stick into the other slot without altering a 128mb pc66 on eBay? I tried before, it either does not detect the size properly or it sits at the POST.

Picky memory issue is seen with 600/600E series. Try another low density 256MB SDRAM.

my 256MB PC133 SDRAM does work fine, but if you insert it into the other slot, it will recognize it fully but only use half of it. Windows XP does boot fine with that. But I only have one 256MB low density SDRAM stick while I have 600, 390X, and T22 waiting for this stick. I think 416MB is as far as it can go. I am getting another stick of Kingston 256mb 16-chip SDRAM on Kijiji later

I think that any PC100/PC133 low-density module installed in the front slot (closest to Ultrabay opening) will only be seen by the BIOS as half-sized. My assumption is that it has to do with the number of banks (2) on those modules.

This will work like I said for 600E using PII. 512MB + 32MB, I had 256MB modules that were for inpsiron 7500. This takes looking and keep in mind not PC133 as well. For 600 has same picky issues so keep in mind too.

I have a PC133 256mb RAM that works on that machine only because it is low density. However, it will be halved if you insert it into the RAM slot close to the opening. Will a PC100 256mb ram solve this problem?

Each of my local computer stores has a box of old ram waiting to be sold to a place which'll pay a set price per kilogram for the ram (their interest is to befiddle it of gold). I offered to pay double the going rate and then cherry-picked anything which looked remotely usable. Paid about 5 USD for 15 modules.

The same economy exists around old processors. They're more expensive than the ram - prices here are $1.50 per each for small processors and $2 a piece for the (ancient) larger processors.

I make a point to thank them and, when they chuckle about the ram being from bygone days, I promise to show them how I used the ram. They agree and then smile like children when I bring in the old machines, promising to put aside any 'new' modules which come in.
