I was thinking a SD to CF (i have a few i knew are good from ipod modding) and do not really want to take apart my 760 just to figure out what kind of IDE to CF i could fit in there.

are there any known models which work well for these purposes or other thinkpads of this era

thank you

Did you need a particularly large capacity? If not, I'd just suggest getting one of these. Only 1GB, but it's fast and works pretty seamlessly (although you'll probably have to remove the master/slave pins from the drive header):

I picked up 3 myself and might pick up more. For higher capacity, there's a 2GB SiliconDrive from an ebay seller in China. Ordered 1, worked in both my 760ED and my 755CE, so I ordered 5 more. Only downside is it takes about 2 weeks shipping time.

One problem with an SD to IDE converter is drive geometry, which is a problem I've been having for a while with CF cards, which effectively limits you to 512MB. Of course, YMMV.
