380Z Midi mixing

Hi All!

I've got a 380z - I've put win98SE on it, and it runs fine.

However, despite that media player and DOOM has no issue playing to it, I cannot hear MIDI files. I've tried CWDINIT /A and /O. I've also turned off quick boot in the BIOS, and even formatted and re-installed windows. I have checked ps2 ? midi and that reports it being enabled (but pointing DOOM at the address ps2 spits out results in DOOM complaining).

Any ideas?

Also if anyone has a link to the recovery disks that I can download, that'd be great too!

This would be a problem with Windows 98 itself and not the ThinkPad. Go into sound settings and ensure MIDI playback device is the appropriate one (in this case I believe it would be Crystal FM).

Yup, it's pointed at Crystal FM Synth, the other option is the Roland MPU-401, which I believe is the port on the dock.

Neither work.

Did you try media player classic to launch the MIDIs? You may need to use an older version.
I'm assuming you've checked that the default audio source is correct, too.

MPC doesn't play it either.

I've discovered something when delving deep into the multimedia applet:

The WaveStream Synth is "Driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem"

Does this mean I need to tweak cwdaudio.ini a bit?

Edit:

Interestingly once I reinstalled the drivers (uninstalled them to install some stuff) that device disappeared. MPC still doesn't play it.

Doom worked on the stock WIN98FE install...

It looks like Cirrus didn't end up making drivers for W98SE for this chipset, which is a bit annoying. I suspect this is the cause.

I've tried trawling driver sites and couldn't find a SE driver that'd work. Unless I come across the ftp site with a bunch of old drivers, I don't have much hope of running 98SE.

Restored the original HDD image I took before I wiped it, and sill no music in DOOM.

It looks like Cirrus didn't end up making drivers for W98SE for this chipset, which is a bit annoying. I suspect this is the cause.

I've had CS4237B working with 98SE with full functionality; the reason why a "native" 98SE driver doesn't exist is because Crystal Semiconductor designed the 95 packages to be fully compatible with 98SE-- under normal operation it shouldn't be that difficult to get working. Although admittedly CS4236B is a superior chip.

You could try the Crystal 4235 driver package which works fine under 98SE.

Or you can try the old CS4236B package / also flawless under 98SE.

Make sure "Synth" isn't muted in the Volume Control. Also make sure the volume knob on the left of the machine is turned up.
