600e ultraslimbay hard drive install - capacity limitation?
600e ultraslimbay hard drive install - capacity limitation?
I have a 600E 2645-4AU and I am looking to install a second hard drive using the UltraSlimBay HDD Adapter. On the IBM support site, the largest hard drive I see listed is 18GB (part numbers 37L2993 or 22L0051).
Am I limited to an 18GB capacity? If not, how large a hard drive will this model accommodate using the UltraSlimBay HDD Adapter?
Also, what are the physical dimensions and specifications that a drive must conform to, in order to fit in, and be compatible with the UltraSlimBay HDD Adapter?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Actually, there's no known HD limit on the 600 series, so there's no reason one of the new 100Gb or 120GB HDs wouldn't work.Laptop_wizard wrote:You can buy up to an 80gig hardrive for that extra hardrive adapter.

Thank you for the replies. You've convinced me that I can move forward with the installation without much restriction.
On a related note, I have the opportunity to purchase a 250GB external (USB) hard drive rather inexpensively, which I thought would be useful storing and archiving larger files at home. However, the comment about the BIOS/chipset limitation of 138GB has me concerned.
Is there any way around this restriction, such as keeping the partitions under 138GB, or would such a high capacity drive be completely unusable with my 600E?
Again, thanks for the assistance.

Hi Chris,
Educated supposition, but supposition none the less.

James
Yeah, I know, but given the fact that HDs of that capacity don't exist yet, it's pure supposition.whizkid wrote:I believe the BIOS, or rather chipset, limit is about 138GB.

The limitation doesn't apply to USB connected devices, just IDE connected HDs.glance wrote:However, the comment about the BIOS/chipset limitation of 138GB has me concerned.
I used to use an external 200GB Maxtor on my 600X all the time with a USB2.0 PC card, never had a problem.
