Power Adapter/Cord for The Thinkpad 760 ED

#1 Post by Sudevan » Wed Feb 08, 2017 4:09 pm

Going through my legacy Thinkpads, I found a 760 ED in beautiful cosmetic shape, and I'm eager to test it. But because I moved last summer, I may have misplaced the power adapter and cord. I think the power cord should be plugged into the four prong input jack placed at the left end of the back of the machine, as one faces the screen. I remember the cord itself as being more complicated than the standard one for the later machines. Is there a source, on eBay or elsewhere, for me to buy a power adapter and cord that will work with the 760 ED?

According to the PSREF of the day, the 760ED used a 35W 4-pin power supply with an FRU of 76H0119. Other systems that also used that supply are 760EL, 760E, 760XL, 760XD. A quick peek on eBay reveals this item: http://www.ebay.com/itm/311531404906 which looks like it fits the bill.

There may be others for cheaper. You can always post a WTB here in the Marketplace.

Thank you, Ray. So, the second cord that goes from the adapter to the wall outlet can be any of the standard cords from other later Thinkpads? In other words, the eBay item shows the adapter plus the cord that connects to the laptop. I am concerned about the cord that goes from the adapter to the wall outlet, which does not seem to be part of the unit. Thanks.

That adapter needs the 3-prong Mickey-Mouse cable, such as shown here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/222401602147

Thank you, RBS. I also found another one similar to the one Ray had suggested, for a much lower price (in fact, he had suggested I shop around). So I think I'll buy both and see if that will work.

That power supply was used on the 355, 360, 750, 755, and 760 series, so you should have no trouble finding an adapter on ebay. As for the Mickey Mouse cable, I believe it's officially known as a Compaq grounded cord, since Compaq originated that style of plug. Those are also easy to find.

Thanks, I just received the one that I ordered, and it seems to have both cables, so I will be trying that out shortly.
