755C Remove cigarette smell.

#1 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Thu Mar 09, 2017 9:46 pm

I just scored a 50$ 755C in almost mint condition(few almost invisible scratches, broken hinge latches, etc.) on craigslist that was refurbished by IBM at some point. I pretty sure that is has a factory image of Windows 95 if anyone wants that. The unfortunate part is that is smells of cigarette smoke. It isn't terrible but it`s noticeable. Does anyone know what can get rid of the smell. I already plan to get some vinegar and baking soda. I know that after time the smell will dissipate so I am leaving in my garage. I've heard of using amazing orange as well. Any other ideas? I am willing to tear down the machine if necessary.

PS: The keyboard is the greatest thing since buckling spring :D

Both funny and ironic how that was my post, and as I type this again, I'm once again sick (probably pollen allergies).
Yes, that system was NASTY. The seller raised a fit, but ebay decided in my favor and I returned it for a full refund.

Funny, the OP(me) has a 755CDV :D . So much for UMPC2024s point!

Ha, I'm jealous! Those machines are particularly rare, notwithstanding the 755CD as well. I've always wondered how the 755CDV worked when you set it up on an overhead projector.

This is how it works: http://thinkwiki.de/images/0/07/755cdv-overhead.jpg

I saw the 755CDV on eBay and I darn near had a heart attacked and drop dead on the spot. When do you find those on eBay. Well, 80$ well spent.

If it makes you feel any better, im jealous of your superb battery rebuilding skills :D .

Well, I guess I should come out and say it - if anyone wants any 755 battery packs rebuilt, shoot me a PM. I can't promise results on the 755CE packs, but I did get one done today, although I got it right on my second PCB/flex cable, and that involved a lot of vinegar/distilled water/air drying (it was the cleanest of all as far as battery leakage, and that says a lot).

Any luck on cleaning up your SmokePad? The smell might go away after a few days once you clean it.

Still smells if you hold your nose to it. Doom is just too much fun for a little smell to bother me :D

I wonder how much different the 755CV is from the CE. I picked one up today for about 30-40 bucks (but I'm told there's a crack on the lid and a password on the BIOS).

755CV LCD + 755CD BASE = 755CDV?

Except that oddly enough, the 755CV and CDV both support Li-Ion batteries, while the 755CD does not. Go figure!

Nope, the 755CD does, but only the Pentium models. All 486 machines CANNOT use Li-ION batteries. The first machine to OFFICIALLY support it was the 755CX, and the ones with those motherboards. Since the 755CX came with a P75, the only 'cross platform' 755 series (ie. 755CD,755CDV,755CV) can only take Li-ION when they are also equipped with the P75.

You most likely have a 486 755CD. If you can get the type number, the following will help:

9545-9BD: 486
9545-9BE: 486
9545-FBK: P75
9545-FBL: P75

Also, note that IBM specifically states that the 486 models can be upgraded to a P75. That means the processor card has been replaced, like the OverDrive chip. This DOESN'T mean LI-ION support.

-Thinkpad4by3, Who was asking the same questions about 6 months ago. You most likely have but have you read the 755 support sticky?

The support sticky, no. The HMM and twbook.pdf, yes. And you are indeed correct, that I have the DX4 rendition of the 755CD. Apparently, the 755CV does have capability to boot from Li-Ion, as evidenced as well by the safety tab on the DC-DC card (thick notch means only Ni-Mh I believe, thin being Li-Ion). Anyways, twbook does say the 755CV is compatible with Li-Ion (I'll have to try it with my one good Li-Ion to be sure). Also, it appears the 755CDV also supports it. That's why I was saying it's odd that the 755CD does not support Li-Ion, yet the CV and CDV do.

I got my 755CV in today, and the removable rear is pretty cool. Took a little bit to figure it out. My ultimate gameplan will be to use the chassis of the 755CD, but move the planar from the 755CV into there, so I end up with a CDV that supports Li-Ion batteries.

Haha, yup. I missed out on the 755CX on ebay by a single dollar, but that's fine - I got the 800x600 version in pristine condition for $50. And the only problem with the 755CV I got this morning (same company) was that 1/3rd of the keyboard bezel was missing. I also got lucky and it had a password, but only power-on, which was easily bypassed (no supervisor password).

Yup. Just finished putting it back together. Now I gotta reassemble the formerly 755CV, which is essentially just a 755CE now (albeit with problems - OS/2, Windows 95, and Linux all had problems crashing, leading me to believe the problem is a faulty CPU or faulty memory).

We'll see if it works with a Li-Ion battery. I did use the DC-DC board from the 755CV, but they honestly look like the same parts, with the only difference being the actual connector (which is on a socket).
