755C Windows 95 Factory Image

#1 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Sun Mar 26, 2017 10:34 am

I got a 755C with a factory image. I can get the image off the drive if anyone is interested in a stock W95 image.

Cool, I`m pretty sure it 360MB HDD. Do you know how to get those pesky plastic HDD caddys with the plastic clips?

I never opened them. To get the 750/360/PC-DOS systems captured, I had to get a copy of LapLink 5 installed and hooked to a win98 ThinkPad with a USB port.
Once I was able to transfer the entire directory structure to the USB key I could take it to a modern system and create a VMware copy of the old TP.

LapLink came with blue cables for serial ports and yellow for parallel port
It's 1990's technology. It used to be available everywhere. Microsoft had their own version. The company is still around but they don't sell licenses for the original products anymore. You will have to get a boxed copy on ebay with the cables.
Also, you would need to reboot the Win95 system into DOS mode to run the DOS version of LapLink. I don't recommend the Win95 version if you want to work with systems older than 1996

I`m pretty sure I have a null cable that has serial on one end and parallel on the other end. I have to look in my closet. I bet someone has released a copy of LapLink if I dive far enough in Google :) .

It's not a null cable for LapLink. But the Microsoft version might work with it.

I can`t see why you couldn`t try IR to a T60 or something like that. There might be IR image transfer or something of that nature out there.

When the system is really old, I just pull the hard disk out, attach it to an IDE to USB adapter, then use something like ISOBuster to extract a .bin of the disk. Then I've used Win32 Disk Imager to write the image to another disk. With a system that's new enough, I boot an an Acronis CD and save the image that way to a network store. The con to the first method is it extracts a literal, bit-by-bit image of the disk, meaning it's very slow, isn't natively compressed, and requires a disk of at least as much capacity as the original to duplicate. But, it works and the software tools are free.

My 755C came with 3.11, which I saved using the first method I mentioned above (did the same thing with the 701c 3.11 image as well). I have since loaded Windows 95 on it (them), but if there's a factory 95 image that you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd gladly receive (and share the 3.11 image in exchange). :)

755C with contrast slider?

#11 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Thu Mar 30, 2017 6:41 pm

I just got a 755C and it has a contrast slider. It also happens to take EDO RAM. Is there something strange or different with my machine because all the other 755C`s I`ve seen have been 1 slider.

Sounds like the screen is from a 755 Cs model. They had the 2nd slider for contrast, and the 1st slider for brightness.

Since when do 755CDVs appear on eBay??

#14 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Tue Apr 11, 2017 8:37 pm

I think either I'm hallucinating or I had a heart attack because there is a 755CDV on eBay for $69.00 with everything. I have no words.

Get it, I just got a 755CV not too long ago. Missing the adapter, taking a chance on it if its working or not. I think I paid $55 or so? It came from Canada. <3

I was looking at a Toshiba 400CDT which also had a CD-ROM drive and a 640x480 TFT LCD for 85$ + 35$ for shipping from the phillipines. How can that thing even compare to a 755C*V series machine :D ?

755Cd(v) ultrabay hotswap?

#17 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Wed Apr 12, 2017 1:45 pm

Can the 755cd(v) swap the floppy drive with a cd-rom drive while in suspend mode? I know that the machine can't boot from the cd-rom drive so to install anything I need to boot from a boot disk.

Max RAM on IC DRAM

#19 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Fri Apr 14, 2017 2:22 pm

I found an EDO adapter in my 755C. What would be the maximum amount of ram supported by the 755C? I don't think 64MB in both slots would work. It has 16MB EDO in both slots right now.

Thinkpad 755CD(V) Li-ion Support *small pic*

#21 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Fri Apr 14, 2017 5:53 pm

When I ordered my 755CDV off ebay, I am getting this white 10.8V 2800mah Li-ion battery. Is this actually compatible because I thought those only were for the 760 machines?

Image

It looks like NiMH when rescaled but it definitely says Li-ion in the large picture.

I use a 10.8v 3.0AH Li-Ion in my 755cx, that one is for an 760ed. Works fine.
There is an optional Li-Ion battery for the 755 series, i guess thats the one you have there.

I know that the li-ion is definitely compatible with the 755Cx as thinkwiki states in the battery section. I'm not sure if it applies to the earlier 755cdv model.

I can confirm that 760/765 Lithium Ion batteries work in a 755CX or 755CD/Pentium (NOT a 755CE or 755CD/486 however), as I used one to upgrade the BIOS on mine ;) Believe the NiMH for 755 also works on 760/765 but obviously you'd get worse battery life

Both my 755C and 755CX have a 72 pin SIMM adapter in them, with two 16MB sticks in them... never tried 32MB sticks but I'd assume they'd probably not work (either only see half the stick, give a 201 error or not POST)

Old Lithium-ion battery replacement

#28 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Sun Apr 16, 2017 11:10 am

Old Li-ion batteries read 3.6/4.1V instead of 3.7/4.2V like new batteries do. Where can I get the older 3.6V batteries from or will new 3.7V ones work? I'm trying to rebuild a 755/760/765 Li-ion battery.

For the 755CD (and older machines) I ended up checking out archive.org's copy of the Thinkpad Driver Matrix from 2003 here:
https://web-beta.archive.org/web/200308 ... SHY-3PLMY2

Unfortunately the actual files weren't archived but I googled the filename linked in the archive.org's page and found nearly all of linked files.

Also, I managed to find the mwave sampleset files by googling the following file names
mwmidwin.exe
mwmidiw1.exe
mwmidiw1.txt
mwmidi-2.exe
mwmidi-3.exe
mwmidi-4.exe
mwmidi-5.exe
mwmidi-6.exe
mwmidi-3.exe

As for the restore CD, I've desperately searched around and couldn't find a copy for the 755CD.

755CDV Remove corroded battery.

#30 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Tue Apr 18, 2017 1:58 pm

I just opened up my 755CDV to find a corroded NiMH battery inside. Is there any specific steps I should take to get the battery out?

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.
