Win98 Installation problems - display & modem

I've just installed Win 98 on a blank HDD in my newly aquired secondhand ThinkPad 600 and am frustated by a couple of problems...

1) I am unable to get the display to work in 1024 x 768 mode. It presently says its got the ThinkPad 1024x768 display - but is using the basic Windows VGA adapter. I tried downloading and installing the relevant display driver from the IBM website - but it doesn't seem to be able to use it and allow me to change to 1024 x 768 mode. Any clues as the the correct file name I'm looking for and where to find it please?

2) I can't get the internal modem to work. After a lot of playing about, downloading the vII drivers from IBM, etc. it says the ThinkPad Internal modem is installed using COM2 - but when I look at it in the ThinkPad Confuguration utility it is always "disabled" - and although it allows me to change the status to "enabled" - it reverts to "disabled" as soon as I close the box. When I try a dial-up it gives the error message 630 - saying its not working properly - although in device manager it says its OK! Any clues most welcome please.

The FAQ in the top sticky thread in the main Forum explains where to find the latest drivers. In your case, you can find them under the Video category on IBM doument DSHY-3TLQ2L: Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad 600.

Also, have you applied the Windows 98SE supplemental install files? This is found at the bottom of the Drivers page.

Thanks Phil, got the display sorted - just the modem left now - hopefully more concentration this weekend will crack it

Despite trying all permutations of installation, removal, etc, I'm still not able to get the internal modem to work. I can get as far as it saying its installed OK, but when I try to connect, it fails with Error 630 - and when I look at modem diagnostics it usually reports no connection to the modem. Also the ThinkPad configuration programme (modem section) always shows it disabled and despite setting it to "enabled" - it always reverts to "disabled" as soon as I exit that set-up window - and the green "indicator" never lights.
I can install and connect with my old Hayes external modem via the serial port without problem and think I have installed all the relevant IBM downloads correctly otherwise.
Can anyone tell me exactly which Thinkpad modem type I am supposed to be installing (when using the "Add New Hardware" utility in my Thinkpad 600 (is it "Mwave 14.4", "Mwave 28.8" or "ThinkPad701" or something else?) and what COM port (1 presumably), which Interrupt and which address should it end up using please?
I presume I should installing v2.6 of the IBM modem software?
Any suggestions would be very welcome please. I'm getting confused

Go to the IBM site and search for the 600 modem. There is an upgrade for the internal modem that will work. I didn't try hard to get the "stock" configuration going when I got a used 600E, I just went straight to the upgrade. I installed the original modem drivers and couldn't get Windows 98SE to recognize the modem, but after installing the upgrade it did.

Sounds like you might kneed a new modem, very cheap ($10 ebay)
I hate that dumb windows 98 thing, that's why I got XP on my 600E.
Try reinstalling windows, try that, and get back with me.

Thanks guys, maybe I'll look out for a replacement modem pcb - it seems there's something basically not right - modem installation shouldn't be this difficult - maybe it got blown by a surge/spike on the phone line.

I recall having this problem too...completely uninstall the modem in device manager...Now, reboot your computer......don't uninstall and reinstall without rebooting. Maybe it will work then, but if not, then try the upgrade as indicated here. There is also an "inf" file I believe in the download matrix...near the bottom of the list...I believe this has something to do with the driver working properly....good luck.

Glad you got the monitor to work -- you didn't say how! Could you explain in detail? I got the Win98 supplemental disk and followed instructions, likewise the vieo adapter -- reinstalled windows -- still looks like a CRT display from 1990.

Basically I downloaded the Win98 video driver at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... BOD-3HHRYY and installed it.

I think I tried the installation a few times before succeeding and maybe got some permutations wrong initially - but was pleasantly suprised on the Nth occassion to find it had installed OK.

I think what I did was as follows....

Run the downloaded "vftpi89m.exe" file to extract the drivers to a location of your choice on the hard disk, then install the Win98 driver by right-clicking on the screen backgound, selecting Properties, Settings, Advanced, Adapter, Properties, Driver, Update Driver - then find/select the Win98 driver from the extracted download files and install it. I think you have to re-boot afterwards - and then select the new 1024 x 768 setting in Display Properties/Settings.

Thanks -- I've done it twice -- I suppose I can keep trying, I also updated the BIOS, reloaded Windows with the supplementary files -- nothing works -- I'm thinking the machine has a problem beyond software or firmware.

I?m still having a problem getting the internal modem to work. I?ve tried changing the modem board without it ,making any difference.

It will apparently install OK using ?Install New Hardware? and says it is working OK, but when I try a dial-up connection it gives Error 630 ? and when I go to ?Modems? in Control Panel and try Diagnostics ? More Info ? get an error message saying it is not connected ? or for an internal modem, may have an Interrupt problem.

I?m beginning to think it keeps getting allocated the wrong Interrupt and Address ? since in Device Manager there?s always something else there, labelled ?Unknown Device?, even with the modem uninstalled, that uses IR 10 and i/o 130 (which is what I believe the modem should use).

I?ve seen a few articles on the web about modem conflicts with the ThinkPad Fast IR Port ? and am suspicious of this, but don?t know enough to stop the system automatically assigning IR?s etc every time I reboot and am not sure what?s right.

Can anyone help on this please? ? it seems like the modem itself is really working, but I just can?t get the system to communicate with it.

Also ? when adding a modem ? what port should I be selecting please?

I?ve (perhaps wrongly) assumed COM1, but read somewhere it should be a virtual port (but which one and will it be on the standard list for selection?).

All suggestions greatfully received ? this is driving me bananas ? and is so annoying cause the rest of it all works so well.

(My modem apparently uses the Mwave device/DSP ? the Modem diagnostics says ?Mwave\Mwave Modem_0430?)

Go to the IBM site and get the latest updates for the modem. Before you install anything remove all the old drivers for the modem from Control Panel. That should get you going.
