701C mobo upgrade

#1 Post by benplaut » Thu Jun 23, 2005 9:39 pm

my 701C hasn't been getting all that much love lately, due to the fact that i haven't yet successfully put Linux on it yet

i was thinking that maybe i should upgrade to the AMB 133MHz mobo, and 64mb of RAM. With that, and my existing hard drive, i could run any of a number of distros suited for old computers (the current hardware is apparrently beyond "old"... it's archaic  )

questions:

what do i gain?

what do i lose?

what risk is there?

what do i need (hardware)?

what will it cost?

is it hard to do? (the extent of my knowledge is building a few desktops, and adding an A/B/G card to my T40)

The 133mhz gain will be most beneficial to anyone who owns the slower 50mhz version of the 701 but all 701's will benefit by a few mhz's which should at minimum make office run better.

As for performing the upgrade, just make sure you know what you're doing and you follow the hardware maintenance manual. Also, do your best to remember what part went where when you are disassembling. Take notes as you go if you have to.

i figured out with my wifi upgrade:

take a picture of the situation, print it, and tape the screws to the sheat, where they need to go 8)

don't you also gain CardBus by doing the upgrade?

Dumb question of the day.
Can you leave off the modem board when you upgrade?
Don't need it because I have a 56k x-jack pc card modem.
At the very least would save a little weight, maybe even some battery life?
TIA

What is an AMB mobo (ok, I know what a mobo is) and where do I find it?

With kind regards

I bought a 133MHz 701 and also it's a little faster than the 75 Mhz, it's imho no "big speedup" - yes it works with the internal Modem.
