My new (to me) Thinkpad 760XD
My new (to me) Thinkpad 760XD
I gambled on this computer on ebay...23$ shipped as "untested", without a power supply. 20$ later for a genuine IBM power supply, the computer boots up! of course I'm greeted by typical dead CMOS battery errors, but I have questions about such an old machine!
1. How do I access the battery/hard disk?
2. Are there any replacement batteries around?
3. What kind of RAM/max ram can it support?
4. Has anybody shoehorned a SSD into here?
5. Does anybody have the restore disks for this computer?
I was shocked by how thick and heavy this beast is, it really competes with some of my Alienwares in terms of weight and girth!

1. The keyboard assembly (including palmrest) lifts up like a car's hood/bonnet. Push the lid latches away from you: Video: https://youtu.be/hW6BsQEUq80?t=71
3. EDO RAM. Max RAM is 104MB IIRC (64MB EDO stick + 32MB EDO stick + onboard RAM)
4. IIRC a CompactFlash card (with IDE adapter) below 8GB works well. An SSD might be too much (it's faster than system RAM)
I recommend reading the HMM https://thinkpads.com/support/hmm/hmm_pdf/vol4hmm.pdf and the Technical Reference https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/p ... 65tref.pdf.

3. Cannot use 2 x 64mb?
4. I have a spare SLC mSATA SSD I want to use through a msata-PATA (IDE) bridge, though I think I will save that for the 600E and try the compact flash card method assuming the memory cells are durable enough

Re: My new (to me) Thinkpad 760XD
IIRC the two RAM slots reside on a daughterboard that also contains 16MB RAM (split into two banks of 8MB). The 64MB stick contains 2 banks of 32MB. To get 104MB RAM, you put 64MB in one slot, 32MB on the other, then one of the onboard 8MB banks is disabled.
I'm recounting this from memory, as I had a 760XD long ago, with 64MB total RAM (32MB + 16MB + 16MB onboard). I think this info can be found in either the HMM or Technical Reference.
128MB may be possible if you can somehow disable all the onboard RAM--removing the RAM chips perhaps?
