What Is This 701CS Component?

#1 Post by ALRUI » Thu Jun 28, 2018 6:14 pm

Hi Folks, trying to help my 13 year old get the 701cs he got working again. I'm wondering what this component on the bottom board is, were assuming a battery but for what as we dont believe it to be the CMOS battery. I was hoping to upload a picture but dont see how here. It looks like a lithium watch battery and measures .31 VDC across the 2 solder pads so if its a battery its dead. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!
ALR

hello and welcome to the forum..
i forgot exactly what that battery is for BUT forum member: hwattys has been restoring and reselling all the 701 series thinkpads i have/had..
he will know exactly what that battery is for..
the battery you are referring to is next to the memory slot on the main board..
you can look at the hardware maintenance manuals.. you can find them on thinkpads.com.. just look for the menu item for them..
i still have a lot of misc. 701 parts and a couple of 701C thinkpads here which i will eventually send to steve (hwattys) to incorporate into his restoration efforts..

Hi Bill! - Thanks for the reply! We'll take a look at the manuals you referred us to. I know JD will need a new case bottom and the piece in front of the screen with the IBM logo on it. Do you have any extras of those you could sell by chance?

Thanks Again!

bits to sell..?
no and yes..
the 701 series developed a paint issue over the years..
some of them become very sticky was the paint fails.. others not so much or at all..
i may have a case bottom someplace, i would have to look..
i really suggest you contact steve huffer (hwattys) as he has a lot of the parts i had and is doing a good job restoring 701 thinkpads..
i have a box partially packed for him but lethargy seems to be my most intense driving force these days..

also ebay is a good source for some spares..

Thanks, I hear ya on the lethargy! After working all day my motivation for helping or doing projects is limited:-) I SHOULD be doing a water change on my aquarium right now but I'm saving energy for making dinner and fireworks.

Have A GREAT 4th!
