Hello,
I'd like to ask fellow oldschool-legacy-thinkpadders for help. I've got two legacy units I'd like to turn into gold pieces due to my upcoming new home purchase.
There are two shining pearls in my garage: 310e and 701cs w/butterfly keyboard. I need to sell them (do not mistake with "want to sell them"), but have absolutely no idea how to quote them. If these are worth close to nothing they will lie on the glory shelf.
701cs "butterfly":
- a part of plastic chipped, but I've got it around so it's repairable
- German-layout butterfly keyboard that opens and closes smoothly
- great visual shape
- seem working well, albeit the screen is cracked
- battery leaked, but was removed and did not damage the motherboard as far as I can see. I have the genuine battery as well
- drops 161 and 163 errors (well that's pretty much standard )
- boots and loads W95; due to lack of working LCD I have no possibility to test it further
- 8Mb of RAM; can't tell which 486 is that
pics are here:

310E:
- exceptional shape
- drops a dead CMOS error on start
- small, hardly visible crack on the lid
- boots into Windows 95 and works just fine
- 16Megs of RAM / 1.6Gb HDD
- the screen seems DSTN to my taste; poor contrast and refresh rate it is rekoned XGA in the system, however, while being 800x600 screen

Re: Trouble pricing 310e and 701cs w/butterfly
The 310E I'd put at around $50. DSTN display, and it's just a generic mid-90s laptop. No CD-ROM. Not a very good machine, but someone might find it useful. Also doesn't have a true Thinkpads keyboard.
701CS. I'd put it around $100-150. Cracked screen is a big loss because it would be a few $ to fix that. Also a 701CS, though you could probably swap for a TFT. If you did swap the TFT display, wouldn't surprise me if you could fetch 200 for it. You don't say if you have the floppy drive or dock for it. Add a bit more if you have one or both. If you have the Type number on the bottom we can tell you if it is the 50 or 75 MHz model. From it being a 701CS, it's more likely to be 50.

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

At the right price, I'd buy the 701C. I have extra screens.
