Hello my thinkpad 760XL will not charge a battery. the power supply is new and the battery is brand new. there is something wrong in the laptop at the place where the plug gets plugged into the laptop at the back. It worked fine and then one day just went kaput. i thought it was the power supply and so i bought a new one. i thought it was the battery so i got a new one. there is nothing wrong in the functioning of the actual laptop, it works fine once it is on. the problem is that it wont charge the battery and without the battery it wont boot on and once it is on it won't stay on.

i can charge the battery in another laptop and then put the charged battery into my laptop but then i only have its use for about one hour and once the battery goes down it goes off. i can't use the laptop without the battery, once the battery goes down it goes off. any suggestions? and has anybody had this problem before at the place where the plug goes into the laptop at the back? if this is a chronic or usual problem with this think pad please let me know. i want to take it to IBM and give them a piece of my mind. thanks :(

Can you use the 760XL without the battery and run only with the AC adapter?

If not (which I suspect) then the power connector has likely failed. It is possible it only mechanically failed at the solder joint, so you could opent the machine and re-flow the solder joints.

If the connector itself has failed (internally), you'll need a new board that it's on.

Since the machine is so old, you might consider buying a parts machine from eBay. I got a 750C (working! minus hard disk) for $5 there. It could provide other parts if more things fail.
