TP 600 vs 600X for DOS gaming machine?

#1 Post by Jefferson » Sat Mar 09, 2019 4:00 pm

I have both 600(P-233mhz, i think) and 600X(P3-500mhz).
which one would make a better DOS gaming machine?
i read that SB sound card compatibility is the most important factor when it comes to DOS gaming. is one better than the other in that aspect?

also, I think 600X should have no problem taking 30GB or bigger hard drive. is that the same for 600? I noticed that older TPs sometimes doesn't play nice
if hard drive is greater than 8GB...

opinions are appreciated. BTW, my 600 is brand-new in box so i'm a bit hesitant to use it but anything for dos gaming, i suppose :)
(and i won't live forever so might as well enjoy it)

Thinkpad 600, 600E, and 600X all use the same 440BX chipset so I'd expect any drive limits to be the same between them. I've had 12 GB drive in a 600E and 60 GB in a 600X with no problems.
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (2720QM/2000M/FHD), T440p (i7-4800MQ/GF730GT/FHD),
T480 (i7-8650U/GF150MX/QHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700, Dell XPS 13 w/Kaby Lake+Iris Pro+TB3
Daily driver: T480

About audio - 600 uses CS4237, 600E uses CS4239; both are ISA audio codecs which should have very good DOS support.

600X uses a CS4624, which is a PCI codec; still has very good DOS support, but issues with stereo FM music are present (normally if you select 'Adlib' it will sound better in games).

Thanks for the info. It's good to know!

I decided to go with 600X just because I can also run W2K in dual-boot mode more effortlessly. But I am having a problem using W98 SEfactory recovery process.

Do any of you successfully run the factory recovery process on 600X recently?
