Did they ever make CD-R drive for 600X?

I'm aware that DVD drive exists for 600X but what about cd-r drive?

If not, is it possible to get one from the same era and transfer the mounting bracket so that it would fit inside 600X bay?

Did anyone ever try?

Yes they even made two, LG and Toshiba.
Why don't you download the 600 and 600X manuals from the HMM link above?

By cd-r, I mean CD burner.

I've been lurking on Ebay for quite some time and I dont think I ever saw a CD-burner for the 600 series.

(And same for the 770 series)

If they do exist, are they just incredibly hard to find?

You have to be more precise.
CD-R is a CD-Reader, which is what you asked for.
CD-RW is a CD-Reader/Writer, which is what you really want.
(same applies for DVD).

AFAIK they were not made for that model.

I believe the first Ultrabay 2000 was the first with a burner drive. The 770 and 600 have an Ultrabay II and UltraSlimBay respectively.

Actually, no. The terminology is -ROM for reader only drive, -R for recordable and -RW for rewritable.

CD-R/DVD-R disks are those that can be recorded once. CD-R/DVD-R drives are those that can only burn one-time disks, not rewritable ones; such drives were only sold for a short period of time, before technology for -RW advanced enough to not bother with -R drives.

i looked at my cd-drives (i have both toshiba and LG) and the way their bezel is mounted seems different from more modern cd-drives I have.

i wonder if i can track down some old cd-burner that has the same mounting holes as that of 600's...

Inside the connector plastics there is an adapter that converts a more universal connector to the ultrabay connector. That more universal connector is shared in majority of the Ultrabay 2000 / Plus devices, so swapping the outside plastic frame with an Ultrabay 2000 device will get yourself a Ultrabay 2000 device working in 600X (That is, the devices that 600 series support and not batteries)
I got myself a DVD-ROM/CDRW combo drive working inside a ThinkPad 600 just like that. Putting an Ultraslimbay device to Ultrabay 2000 can also be achieved by this, but you need to remove the face plate because the Ultrabay 2000 device doesn't have face plate plastic on the lower right corner.

Yes, as well as some plastics cutout differences.

But since Ultrabay 2000 DVD drives are much easier to find (And you can even find a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive like the ones I found), you might as well substitute those instead of paying a premium
