Thinkpad 365XD I/O Disk Error

So I reinstalled windows 98 on the drive it came with as the original 98 was corrupt with some help. The hard drive was tested working in the device before and in another laptop. I put it back in after install and I get 'Disk I/O error, replace disk and press any key'. I put another working drive in with 98 and I get nothing except a black screen, but I assume this is because of different graphics drivers installed and it has a smaller screen resolution. Did the little test feature it has on mobo, etc, and it says 'OK'. I don't know what could be causing this.
