560e CD-ROM activation

#1 Post by superdeez » Tue May 14, 2019 1:54 am

I have a 560e, Pentium MMX 150/48MiB/2GiB that I would like to install either NT4 or 98 on. I understand that to acomplish this, I must install and activate drivers for my Cardbus CD-ROM. I've downloaded what should be the correct drivers, but under MS-DOS 6.22, it just gives me the unspecified error that my cardbus drivers were not enabled.

The setup is a 1969-010 CD-ROM drive and a 00K1084 IDE PC card. The drive appears to be working using AA batteries and I have two cards, the same error occurs under each card. Strangely the BIOS doesn't show the CD drive as active, but at boot time (with the PC-Card bus in the boot order, it spins the drive and the activity light comes on, but it still boots from the HDD.

Does anyone have any experience with this setup? I've considered removing the drive and making my install in another machine.

I got this from a cousin of mine and it's in perfect condition for its age, I'd just like to restore it

I used pctpgw31.exe PC Card Director for DOS and Windows on my 560. And the cd-rom drivers for 1969-008 that came with the drive.

Thank you, I had tried about a dozen executables to try and get the Cardbus working, that worked on the first time. Hopefully the CD driver will come as easily

Just in case, if you cannot manage to install your OS using a CardBus CD-ROM just do it the "old-fashioned" way and get the CD out of the equation.

I didn't have any means to install W95 on my 560e (no PCMCIA extensions or no external CDs) so I just extracted the HDD, plopped it into my other ThinkPad, booted it from a boot disk, and did a format C: /s, creating a skeleton DOS installation. Then, copied the contents of the W95 CD onto the hard drive, pluged it back in the 560, boot into DOS, and run SETUP.EXE. Worked just fine.
