IBM ThinkPad 390E Repair

#1 Post by kyle2000yt » Mon Jul 08, 2019 12:15 pm

So on Facebook Marketplace a guy is selling an IBM ThinkPad 390E for $20, but it has a few issues:
I have a ThinkPad 390E with defective motherboard for sale. The unit works and will boot an OS, but the IDE controller is broken and locks up the system if DMA is used. The screen also has lines down it that occasionally come and go. I considered swapping a 390X motherboard into it, but in the end I figured someone else might get more use out of it. Make offer, will sell whole or as parts. It's in great shape overall, just some scuffs and scratches on the lid.

The seller says the whole system board needs to be replaced, and I found a 390E and 390X board on eBay. The seller says a 390X motherboard is better and will work, but it needs an S-Video port.

As for the screen issue, the seller says it's only 1 green line that if you twist the screen, it goes away. He also said it tends to stay gone with active use. At first I thought it was an LCD cable issue, but now I think the LCD panel needs to be replaced. Does anyone know where I can replacement LCDs? I've only been able to find a 12" LCD, this laptop is 13", I believe.

I found the manual online:
