booting options on 380xd

#1 Post by xuurcanx » Sat Aug 03, 2019 4:02 pm

so I got screwed and ended up with a 380xd with no hard drive and terrible case and some cracked internals, got myself a 4gb compact flash and cp to IDE adapter just to see that 380xd uses an 50 pin IDE pin layout, so me being already bankrupt at this point I'm looking for a cheap option to boot from and load OS onto, found some cheap cp to pcmcia adapters, can I boot from those? if so; can I load an OS on them? if no; what are my other options? are there cp to 50 pin IDE adapters?

In case of CF to PATA adapters, you can use 44pin adapter. You only need to properly connect it in the slot (look for a place with a missing pin). Regarding CF card, make sure that it is visible as a fixed disk. Otherwise, you won't be able to use it.

but how can I fit 44 pin adapter to a 50 pin slot? which pins do I leftout and which I actually solder?

Please check the pins - one of them will be missing. I don't have this device, so I can't tell, if this must be aligin to the left or right (in some models, disks were installed upside down).

just desoldered the socket out of the pins, there were no missin pin. there's a seperate pin with a hole punched init, do I recline on that?

Please check this photo. I have put three old PATA HDDs and CF-to-PATA adapter. Last four PINs on the right side aren't needed. You just have to connect adapter correctly - not upside down or aligned to wrong side. There's a video on LGR showing 380XD restoration and disk installation. It seems, that disk should be installed normally and align to the right, so PINs on the left should stay unused.

And yes, I've tested it and 44pin adapter works fine in 50pin ATA port.

the thing is the socket on the laptop is too narrow, 40 pin adapter is actually wider than 50 pin socket, idk how to plug it in, I cant even think of a way to connect via jumper wires, I dont have the opportunity to print a pcb as well
