I've just tried 3d max 5 on my 600E (RAM 224 MB; PII 366Mhz) and it works just fine.

Of course its rather weak on renders, but handles somewhat complex models quite good. I was so surprised. It will be a great tool for on road modeling for simgle model scenes

However here I face a real issue now- heat heat and even more heat. It appears that now I just have to put fan in modem area (check out "fighting heat" topic).

It appears that 600e still has quite a potential in modern applications.

There are other things you can do for heat. A piece of sheet aluminum under the laptop works great, especially if it's raised to get a little air around it. Cut a piece of 16 gauge (just under 1/16") the size of the bottom of your laptop (should be able to get a 12" square from a hardware store). Paint the bottom side and edges if you like, but leave bare where it touches the laptop. Use a little heat sink paste between the warm metal parts and plate. Get some longer screws where you can and drill holes or use silicone or rubber cement to stick the plate to the case. Some stick on rubber feet will round this simple mod out and help tremendously when the computer is on a desk or table. This will reduce heat noticeably. It won't add much to the size or weight of the machine either.
