Concerns about the 600E

#1 Post by sniperz47 » Wed Jun 16, 2021 7:19 pm

Hello Thinkpad community, I have recently purchased a 600e and I have been trying to collect as much info on upgrade paths but I still have a few concerns on my mind.

1. Is it possible to upgrade the bios without a cd or floppy? I read up that you can use the 600X diskless utility which runs in windows to flash a 600e bios no problem. Can anyone confirm this? I also have a dead battery and because of that I may have to do some extra work.

2. Do you need an updated bios to for the system to see a pentium 3? (500mhz specifically) my bios version seems to date to November of 1999 if that helps.

3. Is there a 10GB HDD limit? Thinking of doing an msata to ide conversion but any ssds smaller than 8gb cost more than larger ones which is obviously not feasible.

Many Thanks

The only thing I can offer is that I have for many years run a 60GB HDD in my 600 (no E, no X). If I can do that, I'm sure a 600E can.

The important thing is all setup of the drive with it directly installed in the laptop - the "initialize" function in BIOS, then all partitioning. That's all I had to do back in 2004 with my 600.
