New to vintage Thinkpads, need some help with 765L

#1 Post by richthofen » Sat Jun 26, 2021 10:52 pm

Hi there!

I just got a few vintage ThinkPads (2x R40, A21m, 765L) and I'm loving them so far! well, at least the first 2 since they're the most complete ones... Turns out the 765L I got had a bad RAM and didn't include a HDD cage/caddy.

Anyhow, I need some help. I haven't been able to find on eBay the P/N for the cage/caddy thing (29H9236) but I did find two that look pretty much identical albeit have a different number. Both listings say they come from a 760-series 810MB drive so I guess it would fit the laptop but I'd really wish a confirmation from someone more knowledgeable than myself.

Same thing about the DIMM modules, they look like PC100/133 but they're shorter than the ones I've found... Do they have a different name?

IIRC the 765L uses EDO RAM.

Hello. Sometimes parts cost more than the whole. It may be better just to sit on it a while and see if anything comes up such as a complete working unit that your current 760 can be used for spares or a cheapy with some small damage.

Hi, I didn't see that link, thanks!

The manual I had didn't allow me to search so some info was missing for me.

Thanks!, I just double checked it.

My unit appears to be working fine (save for the broken RAM module) and I get into the insert boot media animation. That's mainly my motivation to get the missing parts.
