No HDD on 765L

#1 Post by richthofen » Thu Jul 29, 2021 8:06 pm

I recently got the HDD caddy my 765L was missing but the disk doesn't show on the config screen, appearing greyed out on the test screen. I am using a 40GB drive with a 2GB MS-DOS partition I just made on my A21m. Does it mean that the caddy/laptop is done for? Am I using a disk too big for the caddy somehow?

I'm actually surprised that it even boots. IIRC the 760 series has a BIOS limit of slightly below 8GB for HDDs. The workaround back then was to install a "Dynamic Drive Overlay" on the HDD before installing it on the Thinkpad. Said overlay a a feature of the old Ontrack Disk Manager and probably IBM's older HDD tools.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

I tried that but that didn't work (made it on another laptop though) but I found a small 4GB micro SD card that worked and could finally install MS-DOS to test.

However I'm kind of giving up on the laptop because it auto turns off seconds after DOS boot text. I honestly suspect the laptop is beyond cooked and the mere fact of it turning on is just an oddity, or perhaps it's due to a faulty AC adapter that can't give enough juice.

That could be a RAM issue. First thing DOS loads is probably Himem.sys, so maybe try pulling ram from the system or replace it.
