Thinkpad 701C Dock II Adapter Kit (04H6196 or 04H8353)

#1 Post by H-Atkinson » Fri Sep 24, 2021 2:11 am

Does anyone actually have one of these things? If so, can you provide any photos? I can't find pictures of it, and really the only evidence to support its existence is Thinkwiki and archives of IBM's options lists. Theres also a few sketchy online sellers, and a long-out of stock eBay listing (which calls it a car adapter for some reason). Theoretically, how hard would it be to make an adapter to connect a 701C to a Thinkpad Dock II provided I cannot find one of these? I know for a fact that the connector on the 701C is not the same as that on the Dock I or Dock II, so theres a physical limitation, but are they even close to electrically compatible? Did this adapter do anything, or was it all passive?

Thanks!

Hey !
(I previously posted this reply regarding this in your Marketplace inquiry... wanted to post here too to be sure you saw it)

Hello. That adapter kit is one of the few Dock II items I never utilized or resold back in the day... I have standard 701 port replicators and floppy drives/cables available if you need.. but not the internal adapter for the Dock II.
I found this info for you that may be helpful. This link has been google translated to English (hopefully). It shows pics and how adapter integrates with the 3546-001 dock.

Best of luck to you with your search ! If I magically run across any of the adapters in my bunker... I'll let you know ;-)

Thanks for the info. I hadn't seen that German thread or the photos. Glad I now know it did get sold and that they're at least theoretically sold. There are a few listed on some pretty sketchy sites. Any idea if these are legit? Thanks again!

EDIT: Those last 2 are certainly fake, they're auto-generated with images pulled from web searches. First one may be real, reached out to the business to see if they do actually have it.

I found one through a forum member here. I should have it in about a week, and will document it. Hopefully I'll have a working 701 to test/demo it with too, though USPS seems to have put a temporary stop on that.

I had one, and can confirm that it worked, but I gave away my Dock II years ago. I remember using it with a SCSI drive in the Dock II. It looked very weird - the tiny 701C on the enormous Dock II.

Let us know how it works out!
