How to identify MMC-2 CPU module?
How to identify MMC-2 CPU module?
I found this MMC-2 module in my box of bits, which I think came from a Thinkpad 600X, though it may also have come out of a 600E. I have tried searching for the codes printed on the label, including some variations (a couple of digits are a little unclear), but I get no results. I'm currently tinkering with a Thinkpad 770X, and am intrigued by the possibility of upgrading it to a PIII, but how do I tell if the spare MMC-2 module I have is a PIII or a PII?

Re: How to identify MMC-2 CPU module?
Having compared the number and placement of the PID/VID resistors to an image of a known module I'm pretty sure this is a PIII 650 with Speedstep. Am I correct in thinking this would work fine in a TP 770X, albeit at 500MHz, and with the usual L2 cache caveat?

Re: How to identify MMC-2 CPU module?
I have no idea how a Pentium III works with a system designed for Pentium II, but the model number would be shown when you peel off the FRU sticker and there's a string that reads something like PMM75002101AA (on my 750Mhz module), where that 750 inside stands for 750Mhz.Lomax wrote: ↑Sun Jan 16, 2022 6:57 amHaving compared the number and placement of the PID/VID resistors to an image of a known module I'm pretty sure this is a PIII 650 with Speedstep. Here's the gallery of my Pentium III 750Mhz module that I had and performed a ADP3420 chip replacement (the cousin of the ADP3421 causing blink of death in T2x series):

Re: How to identify MMC-2 CPU module?
Intel used to have a page that explained how to identify the MMC-1 and MMC-2 modules from the number codes on the cards, but I guess they've deleted it now.
Here's a quote from an old post by an old member, Katch:
To build on that, the 3rd letter of the first three letters is really the one that identifies key aspects of whether the CPU is on an MMC-1 or MMC-2 card:
PMM - MMC-2 Pentium
PMN - MMC-2 Celeron
PMC - MMC-1 (I think?)
Phil.

After buying what I thought was a 600MHz P3 w/ 256Kb L2 Cache and actually getting a Cel w/ 128Kb I thought I'd add a little guide to identifying which are which from the part numbers.
Example: PMN60001201AB
PM=Processor Module
N=Intel Celeron processor Mobile Module (MMC-2)
600=600 MHz
01=128 KB Cache
201=201 Notifiable Design Revision
AB=AB Notifiable Processor Revision
So the little 01 in bold is the bit to look for; 01=128Kb L2 Cache 02=256Kb

PMM - MMC-2 Pentium
PMN - MMC-2 Celeron
PMC - MMC-1 (I think?)

Re: How to identify MMC-2 CPU module?
Oh, and to answer your original question, yes. That's right. 770X/770Z can use Pentium PIII MMC-2 modules, and you can use the CMOS edit to get rid of the bootup error associated with the L2 cache. But like you say, Speed-step enabled PIII modules like the one on a PIII 650MHs MMC-2 will run at their "stepped down" speed, which is150MHz below their listed speed unless you do some kind of hardware hack/bypass (which I've never done, but which apparently can be accomplished and has been tested by some).
Don't forget that you may need/want to swap the built-in 64MB (?) memory module in the bottom of the 770X case. Off-hand, I forget exactly how this works, but it may not (probably won't?) be compatible with the PIII bus speed of 100MHz. In my 770Z's, I always replaced that RAM chip with a 128MB 100MHz module. I think you can disable it if you like instead of replacing it, but if you're taking apart the machine anyways, you might as well replace it. And if you've got 128 MB down there, then it makes it easier/cheaper for you to eventually max out your RAM with a 256MB + 128MB chip in the regular two other slots. The 256MB chips used to be hard-to-find and somewhat expensive.

Re: How to identify MMC-2 CPU module?
I think I have some success with finding 256MB 16 chip SDRAM RAM sticks that works fine with the PC66 and PC100 machines, and you should be able to find them on ebay nowadays. In fact, even if you have an 256MB PC133 SDRAM stick, it should work fine too if you have the 16 chip configuration. (If you have the 8 chip configuration, then you get anywhere from not getting through POST or crashing when loading any OS and so on, ironically similar to if you were to stick 8 chip 4GB sticks into an Arrandale gen laptop)pkiff wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 12:45 pmDon't forget that you may need/want to swap the built-in 64MB (?) memory module in the bottom of the 770X case.
