Use 760XL Charger with 755C?

#1 Post by tpwman » Mon Sep 26, 2022 2:32 pm

I've found an untested 755C locally for a good price that I'd like to purchase. However, I only have a charger for my 760XL. I know that the plugs are the same, but the 755C uses a different brick. Can I safely use my 760XL charger (FRU 85G6705) with a 755C? Thanks

EDIT: Seems like the 755c power adapter that it comes with is 40w, while my 760xl adapter is 35w. It should be fine as long as I'm not pushing the CPU right?

hello, welcome to the forum..
i started this forum back when the 700, 720, 750 & 755 series were extant..
but i can not recall if a 760 power brick will work on a 755CD..
IF that trapezoid plug with 4 contacts is the same, one to the other then it might work..
i don't think i have one of those in my junk box or a 755 series thinkpad..
good luck.. :-)

The 'standard' that I've always worked to is:

1) Voltage (and ensuring it's DC not AC!) is king. It should match and definitely never use a PSU with higher voltage on anything you expect to live
2) Amp or Wattage rating is the maximum the PSU can delivery but typically it will only deliver what it's being asked. So you can always use a much higher amp/wattage PSU with a lower amp/wattage device because the device will only take what it needs.

I think these are cross compatible. There is a certain and specific (I'm thinking the 300 or 700) which uses the same connector but actually uses a higher voltage and the later PSU won't work.

Having a 755C and a 760EL with their original chargers, the 755C's charger and 760EL's chargers have the same pinout and voltages. The 760 charger I have is a slightly higher wattage than the 755's (40W vs 30W, respectively), but they both work to power the other. Unless you were trying to charge the battery while simultaneously pushing the system hard you probably wouldn't have any issues either way.

Thanks all appreciate the help. Hopefully the 755c itself works.
