IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Recently I found some nice and old IBM treasures for real cheap, and I am struggling to pick one to buy.
I found a thinkpad 700 9554 and a 380 2635 in good shape but with some use. Both are really cool but one has a 486 and the other a Pentium which makes me feel inclined to pick the 700. BUT and now is where it gets interesting, both laptops are untested and could not even work. Normally Im fine with this but seen as these are pretty old, getting replacements can be a journey not to mention the price those replacements may cost.
But what am I going to use them for? For some time now Ive been gathering some thinkpads, repairing them and taking them to peak potential, and many times asking them too much with good results. But Ive never encounter such old laptops.
Looking for some info online I found... nothing much than a bunch of videos explaining the history behind them but barely any info about dissasembly, upgrades or components, only basic specs like ram, cpu and screen res. That brings me here, both are in same condition, same price, and same no tested.
Which should I choose? I need some pros and cons that I couldnt find online sadly. And then maybe I can do some testing and share some info in case someone else looks for it.

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
I’d be all over that 700.
The 380 is still a “common” machine (feels weird saying that about a 90s laptop), but the the 700 is the first Thinkpad to be branded as such and rather rare. There is sure to be issues with it.. battery corrosion and brittle plastc would be my first worries. Still - I’d take a non working 700 over a working 380.
.. and yes getting it working is likely to be major project!
That being said - the 380 is likely a more easy machine to live and work with parts are more available and the hardware is gonna feel more like a “modern” laptop.
Ps use the hmm link at the top of this page to get a bit more technical with them.
Also take my opinion as just that. I own neither of them, but I can dream cant I?

I would get both if I could but currently I can only spend so much in hobbies like this. Dont get me wrong if the other laptop is not sold by next month Im grabbing it too, I just want to make sure I get the best option first haha
Also by the sounds of it seems the 700 is a better option for now which is nice to know

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Just read up bit on both.
The 700 does come with a couple of other cons:
ESDI HDD: This could be rather difficult to replace today, if the current drive does not work
No sound: if you intend to play games
Still would not stop me from getting the 700

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
To be honest Im pretty sure both hard drives are in bad condition, I dont know for sure of course but it is most likely. As well as the battery. And maybe even the screen if they are pasive matrix. But who knows maybe Im greeted with nice sounding hdd and a bright screen.
Yet I wanna bet there has to be some sort of adapter to get a compact flash in there. Maybe an SSD but thats probably pushing my luck as Ive only worked with IDE adapters, nothing older or rarer

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
don't forget about failing electrolytic capacitors... they'll almost certainly have gone bad on the display of the 700, and likely leaked corrosive fluid as well. they'll need to be changed. early thinkpads had pretty terrible hinge design as well, likely broken or will break soon. 380 hinges are solid as far as i know, being newer they'll likely be designed better.
is there any solid state device to replace an ESDI drive?

For something flashbased to esdi, I dont think I’ve seen something like that before, but then again i havent actively searched.
There was apparently an esdi to ide solution already back in the day:

(Scroll down a little) But likely complete unobtainium today.

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Replacing caps is something Ive done before Im not too worried. It was the screen that I was most concerned about until I was looking for the charger aaaand it seems it is not only very specific and rare but also the few I could find are expensive wow.
That led to make some research on the docking station but that doesnt seem to charge the (I assume dead) battery.
Also thanks for the info about esdi to ide that should help getting and ssd attached, I'll do some more research to find the adapter and the charger.
This "real cheap deal" could turn a bit pricey hahaha

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
I own about 5 x 700 machines - some in excellent condition and every single one have breaking or broken hinges. The design of the 700 means the lid hinges get very hard to turn and they're screwed in with 2 or 4 screws directly into very flimsy brittle plastic.
So on one hand the 700 IMO is the first true thinkpad (when you think of bento box, red nipple, nice keyboard, etc) but it's completely unusable as a play machine because if it isn't broken it soon will be.
If I have any that are not broken, I have stored them intact and working but with the lid seperated from the base because I know every single time it's opened it could well be the last.
380? Just a nice playful W98 retro machine. Easy parts, CD-ROM, big screen, IDE->CF card is easy, etc.

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Hey solidpro,
Ouch.. sad to hear the brittleness is that badon the 700. Is it just the hinges where this is an issue, or does it extend to the entire casing? I’m wondring since I’d like one of these someday, and if its just the hinges I might just leave the darn thing open.

Whole case is very brittle, but as long as you don’t bang or drop it, the stress from the hinges is the only thing that will make it crack.

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
After a long day of work an idea came to mind. Okay theres no charger, no dock, no nothing but really what is it that I need to charge? Ive got plenty of chargers and some multiheaded chargers too I just need the head... and then there it was, some research later I found an old post about this with some links to some nice charger adapters.
Finally here I am I just ordered the Thinkpad 700 and the adapter without spending more than 50€ (around $56) which is pretty good imo.
Also when it arrives in less than a week I can do some testing (I accept requests, even crazy ones, I will be doing a lot of limit pushing like trying to get the most modern OS possible or getting youtube playing in ASCI characters)if it works hahaha
If it doesnt Ill update with the issues it has and the repairs I had to do
Next month will be time for the 380 if it is still available

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
A 700 for €50 is a deal. If you ever don't want it, or want to swap for a 380, let me know! I don't think I've ever even seen a non-working 380 - they're built like tanks.
The 700 hinges get really stiff and the plastic bases they screw into get really brittle.
As far as I know, and I've tried, the hinges cannot be lubricated or loosened and the base cannot be insulated in any way to protect it. I think that maybe someone some day will come up with a 3D printed design which replaces the standoffs in the base with a modern equivilent. Or one day I'll learn how to design 3D printed models and do it myself....

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
If I ever dont want it I will let you know. I will eventually get a bunch of thinkpads and older IBM laptops or "portable computers" to test their limits, they have much to offer and may surprise many.
My most succesful experiment was with the T23 on which I made a post some time ago. Which is succesfully running a triple boot with a modded up to date version of XP, then windows 8 consumer preview and Q4OS linux. Simply amazing.
Hopefully this 700 will be up to the task and gets more than one surprised, including me of course.
Now 3D printing is not really that hard, Ive done it before with some friends. You mainly need the 3D printer and a 3D model that you want to print. Sure if it is a complex model you may need to add some stability to it so that it can be printed correctly but hinges dont look too complicated to print. Make a bunch of photos, 3D model it and print it

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
And well, it just arrived, super soon which is always good. I must say, it looks like it was used like a couple of times and then stored away, the previous owners said they lost the charger which makes me believe thats what happened. The rubber layer is all sticky for some reason which is understandable, tho the keyboard, screen and pretty much the rest of the laptop is in perfect shape, it weights a ton!
Hopefully the adapter doesnt arrive too late so that I can test it. I found this old post which mentions it:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=124218&p=806268#p806268
In that post it states that the polarity might be messed up somehow which is something I need to test when it arrives. I got the one on ebay which comes a lot of adapter with it. I may need further explanation on how to fix the polarity in case its wrong because I couldnt catch up with the post haha
I may also dissasemble it to check whats inside the hood but Im a bit afraid to do it before I check if it works.

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
With the sticky coating you can use Eucalyptus oil to very carefully take back the top coat leaving a fairly nice black plastic underneath.
I also use diluted IPA. Be carefuly of accidentally stripping anything actually metal though because you'll just end up with....metal.
How are the hinges?

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
I will look for some eucalyptus oil because that stickness is not fun, I appreciate the tip.
Also the hinges are just in excelent shape it looks like it was use only a few times and forgoten for some reason. I bet even the hard drive is good. You can even see the keys as if they were new, no signs of evident use, the characters are super visible on the keyboard. Like you know when you use a keyboard a lot the letters start to dissapear and the keys start to turn more black, well none of that is going on here. But that could very well be the quality Im not sure.
As for the charger, new update, it will take almost 15 days to arrive, hopefully Im wrong but ebay gotta be like that with international shipping, cant complain. Anyway if anyone has any idea how to charge this thing until the adapter arrives I would really appreacite it if you let me know

Get the tpvol2.pdf manual from the HMM link above, then check page 72 for the pinout of the power supply.
You may be able to concoct your own temporary adapter, using an 20V charger from e.g. the T60/T61/Tx00/Tx10/Tx20/Tx30 series

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Heu everyone, I arrive with a few updates and questions. I know its been some days but trying to work with old hardware takes time, also I have little free time.
Trying to charge made no results, I have been carefull not to damage anything but the laptop didnt turn on any lights. No smoke coming out of it either which is good. Not sure if this is because the hand made weird adapter Im using is not working properly, which Im 90% certain is the case.
On the other hand Im suspecting maybe motherboard has energy issues, Im not sure. I want to open it up and see the internals. Im also curious about the upgradability of the components like cpu or ram. Some documentation online (the few there is), says it works on IC DRAM, but thats mostly all I know so far, I would be limited to 16MB unless I switch CPU.
I think I'll wait a few more until the ebay adapter arrives, and if theres still no signal I will tear it apart to check inside. I mean I will do it anyway but I want to confirm if it works first haha

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Just want to say, and totally my own opinion which may not be shared by others... the 700 is a museum piece, not a do-er upp-er! Suspect most internals are hard wired, updates or hacks rare or impossible. Seriously there are other machines which are almost the same form factor - the 755 comes to mind which are infinitely more modular, common, upgradable, with a better screen to start with and evolved hardware which had gotten through lots of iterations of failure!

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Hey I have some good news and some bad news.
The screen was lighting up when the adapter was conected although nothing else would happen, no other lights would turn on, no battery or hdd indicator would turn on, nothing. Then I tried the home made adapter and I heard a "pop" sound and then a burnt smell came out of it.
After some dissasemble, I found out there was something which I dont know what it is, looks like a very small black rectangle box with L6 (I assuse it is a 6) written on it, it has 2 conections on the back and 1 on the front, with burn markings, it is shorted, the rest of the boardSSS (it has 4 motherboards slaped onto each other) look fine.
I blame it all on my lack of skill in making chargers lol, I might order a new L6 piece online if you guys know what it is, and try to soldered it and see what happens.
No more signs of life were given after the "pop", also if you happen to know where to grab a compatible charger I would appreciate if you let me know haha

Maybe working on rare machines isn't for you.
Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700

Post a picture of the component and I’ll try to ID it.
Your average ThinkPad collector.

Heres the pic and a link just in case I messed up the pic cuz Im still figuring out how to add pictures here haha
Theres only an L that can be seen, its because other components close to it have L6 printed onto them that I assume it is another L6. But Im not sure if it is a transistor or what it is.
I can solder a replacement no prob, I may also buy some kind of compatible charger cuz... yeah... I dont want to fry other components
Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Hmmmm if wiring up 2 pins in a power supply causes the thing to set fire, I'd maybe take up fishing or something.... Or get a less rare machine. I don't have a single 700 which isn't with broken hinges so maybe you had the only working one in existence....

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Thats a bit too negative but I see your point. What can I say, I was experimenting I wanted to fix it and ended the other way but these things happen. Right after I solder a replacement I'll check everything again and see whats going on. I bought it as knowing it might not work, even if I cant fix it, it would still be what I bought.
But I remain possitive, I think I can make something out of this and learn one thing or two.
Im possitive I can get it working ^^

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Do you have a multimeter? They're pretty cheap.
I never plug in a PSU without testing it on a multimeter. I've had a few power supplies recently that are OEM but were nearly double over voltage and I've had others that the pin wasn't the same as on the label. You can usually get away with under voltage and wattage doesn't matter - if it's too low it just won't work, but over voltage or bad polarity and you're almost always going to end up in a worse state than you started.
I'm all up for restoring, repairing, tinkering, experimenting, hacking, upgrading - I just think you've picked the wrong machine to do any of that with. It's a museum piece.

Re: IBM Thinkpad 380 vs 700
Yes, I have a multimeter, it comes in handy a lot. I even checked the PSU but I guess I did it wrong. I was using a 16-20V multicharger and the required for the 700 is 19-20V, the problem was I messed the polarity with the ebay adapter. Thats why I ordered an IBM compatible charger, expensive but Im committed into this project Im more than willing to buy replacements. I also found a replacement for this motherboard so if I cant fix this one for some reason I can buy another. Hopefully nothing else is damaged, I took a careful look at the other boards and I couldnt see anything that looks bad.
I will continue with this and see what happens, I really want this beauty back in shape
