770X won't complete boot

WARNING: NEW USER here.
Got this TP770X given to me by a relative, surplus to him. Known issue was that the batteries were dead. Otherwise, it was working on AC power. Slowly, it got harder to boot up, in that the screen requiring (or wanting) date/time reset information started showing up. And more frequently. Then a new screen, kinda mysterious, circle on the left, arrow in the middle, vertical line on the right, with each of these highlighted in a slow sequence. No mouse icon, and no key presses seemed to make any difference, it just went on and on and on. Boot process stopped at that point.
Replaced the CMOS battery (hoping for a cheap fix) -- no joy.
Now running the diagnositics program that shows up when you press F1 while turning the machine on, with no report back from any of the test modules, so far.
Oh -- no manuals came with this TP.
Any thoughts on where to go from here?
TIA!
Ed
