IBM PS/2 note N51 sx how to disassemble? [WARNING: PICS!]

#1 Post by kasianus » Sun May 21, 2023 5:51 pm

Hello friends! Sorry for my English. I'm from Russia. I bought this ancient laptop at a local flea market, I want to get to the motherboard, but I could only remove the bottom cover of the case. Please tell me how can I do this? :help:

From memory, there are 3 screws on the bottom and you have to use a plastic pry tool to seperate the shell around the base from the shell around the keyboard. Essentially, I think, the keyboard surround is inserted within the base and it's held in with plastic tabs. Once you get the bottom off, you can dismantle the machine piece by piece by the bottom.

Thank you friend! We managed to remove the lower part of the case on your advice! Then I stalled, the keyboard is attached from below under all the boards. And as far as I understand, there is no way to remove it from above?
And tell me please, what are 2 small batteries for?
One, I assume, for CMOS settings, and the second?

You don't really remove the keyboard. You can disassemble the whole thing from underneath and you eventually end up with the bottom of the keyboard.

The coin battery is for clock and CMOS settings. The big yellow packaged battery top/right is for hibernation. It will be dead and it will be causing all the green parasitic corrosion across the PCBs, through it's connector so take it out and throw it away - it's not necessary to have the machine working.

You really need to carve out a big grid on a piece of paper and unscrew each thing you can marking out the steps you did to disassemble, so you can tell what order to put it all back together and which screws go where.

Go to the HMM link at the top of this page and download tpvol1.pdf.
It contains (dis-)assembly instructions and parts-list for that N51.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
