360P dead screen - what to do?

#1 Post by solidpro » Wed Jul 19, 2023 3:58 pm

I've got a really really nice condition 360P. But the screen is completely gone. As in complete vinegar which I had spent hours removing only to then find out the PCBs around the digitiser are pretty rotten and loose too. So it's a goner.

The screen is a very unique Toshiba unit with pen touch, so the chances of finding another are virtually nil.

What shall I do with it? It still works, but really the whole charm of the machine is the pen touch display which doesn't work...

I guess I could break it up for pieces but the chances of that many people needing 360P parts are pretty slim. I know someone on here needs a 360PE system board, but the HMM says the 360P board is different...

Seems such a shame.

VNBTLX-8104S-ZZA, IBM P/N 84G5665

I've a feeling this was specially made for IBM because the 360 was one of those special machines for the 1994 Olympics. It's a weird fat panel with a seperate connector and board for the touch element. I think the only place I'll find one of these is in a 360P/PE that is otherwise dead.

BTW the main reason it's dead is it lived in Japan for 30 years which has caused vinegar syndrome. I think in most other countries it would have been fine.

Hang on to the machine - I make no promises, but I have a strong recollection of buying a complete 360P screen assembly about ten years ago. I have a strong feeling it's in a box or jiffy bag inside one of my archive boxes, just haven't found it yet. To put that into context, I'd forgotten I had two 750P's until I found them in one of the archive boxes back in March when I did a big hunt for ThinkPads...

Wow, ok, great. I put the whole thing back together and it's gone back on the shelf, labelled up as a 'maybe' future thing. If anything comes your way, please let me know!

Don't have a 750P. If you want to sell or swap for something, let me know!
