memory upgrade compatability 390x and a20m

#1 Post by qweds » Mon Aug 08, 2005 2:24 pm

Hi,

Terribly sorry if this is a repost but when I did a search i got some 3000 hits and none seemed relevant, not sure how to focus the search on a single foum I guess.

Anyways, here is my predicament.

My company uses a whole bunch of painfully old IBM thinkpads (390X and A20M's) Anyways the thing is the company is a bankrupt estate and won't be around all that long so big boss man is not too interested in spending money on anything unnecessary. However these 5 year old machines with 128mb ram were recently upgraded to Win XP and 2000 and they are starting to buckle under the demands. I've been tasked with finding a cheap solution to keep them going so here I am. As I looked around at prices I noticed that 'generic' notebook sodimm's of pc100 could be had for as low as ~$50 for a 256mb while ibm's simpletech memory was going for no less than ~$180. Cruising over to crucial's website (for the garunteed memory selector) I found the dimm's for ~$105.

Well then, finally to my question, does anyone know if it matters at all what kind of memory i throw in here? Will any 3.3v 144pin pc 100 memory do the trick? I don't need anything special, I just need it to work. Also knowledge about any other sites that specialize in this kind of legacy memory would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Search eBay for "33L3070", that's the part number for the IBM 256MB PC100 lo-density SODIMMs you need for those systems.

Tons available, some with BIN prices of $50! Auction prices are even lower.
