Toshiba SD-R2002 CD-RW/DVD-ROM in a 600/600x???

I obtained a Toshiba SD-R2002 CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive (ROM ver. 1029) from a HP ZT1190 , and attempted to replace my working IBM CD/DVD-ROM drive (Toshiba SD-C2102) with it. The R2002 plays DVD back fine, but the CD will not read or write. The laptop’s bios is up-to-date, as are all the drivers.
I note that IBM only shows firmware upgrades for the R2002 with the A, T and X series laptops systems. When checking the drive with IBM’s upgrade software it indicates the firmware is current. Is it possible that a firmware flash would fix the problem?
Has anyone used this drive in the 600 series or encountered similar problems? If running successfully, what firmware version?

Do you have another system you could possibly try the drive in?
Pretty rare for only one side of these drives to fail, they're usually all or nothing.
Have you tried reseating the Ultrabay connecter?

also, i might note that this is NOT an ibm supplied drive and thus just might not be 100% compatible..

Specifically, I would try this firmware:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_file.php?site= ... 2_X035.zip
Will make your drive region free and clear up any issues at the same time.
You can also upgrade your official 1029 firmware to the official 1035 by using the following:

Other than the above, my other suggestion is to use a good lense cleaning CD and see if that helps.
