need help with HardDisk on i1400

#1 Post by iougs » Mon Sep 05, 2005 2:17 pm

Hello all:

Machine is i1400 2611-412 ...

here's the problem ... can't seem to be able to format the HD .. so being reseourceful :D, I try the Drive Fitness Test to see if the HD can be salvaged ... and I get:

Low system Perf 0x45 when I run the advanced test ???

I should say that it took about 3 hrs to run the test (that's a 5 gig HD), which seems quite long.

I am currently running PC Doctor on it just for giggles, but it seems it's gonna a long time to go through the test.

what do you guys think?
Salvageable? if yes, how?
if not, where can I get a drive beside ebay and what model should I be looking for?
Which (cheap) drive (20g would be more than enough for me) should I get at newegg that's kinda guaranteed to be recognized by the BIOS?

Thanks for your help and sorry for my newbie-ness.

Hello, me again, again.

Any slim HD will fit. I just got two 20 g ones for $48.00 on eBay. Try your luck. The slim ones are of 9.55mm height. Make sure !

I would run Baktrak on the dirve first, it will set all the sectors to 0 (zero) and the HD will be like it just came out the production line. Then do an FDISK on it and a format, obviously. If it will not format, game over.
RIP a HD.

I have had Tinkpads where IBM quoted a maximum HD size of 840 megs and they have run 6 g HDs. That limitation, methinks, is due to whatever is available at the time of the publication.

Have a Thinkpad day.
Two Thinkpads G-41.
Thinkpad i Series 1200 and 3 1300.
Thinkpad 365 XD ( exchanged for a $100 rebate ).
All on WiFi and Ultra VNC. Have fun ! I do.
