I bought a ThinkPad 760ED on eBay about a week ago, got it today. It initially powered up to the DOS prompt, but after I swapped in the CD-Rom drive it beeps twice and won't come on.

Any tips?

Try booting the computer up without the cd drive. If you still can't boot, then with the power off and the drive removed, hold down the red reset button (loceted directly to the right of the docking station port, you'll need a pen to hit it) for about ten seconds then power the computer on again.

It powered up after I used the reset button, but ater 30 seconds or so it turned back off again...

It stays on all throughout the hardware test thing, but everytime I restart it cuts off at the same point. Right after I choose to start the computer with CD-Rom support...

Have you tried booting the computer without the cd drive in place and run DOS without the CD support?

Also try going back to the old CD drive to see if that works, it's very possible you have a defective CD drive. I once worked on a 760XD that was out of commision due to a bad cd drive and when I removed it things worked just fine on it.

It doesn't seem to make any difference which drive is in, or whether there's even a drive in at all. It stays on for about half a minute after reset, and then shuts back off again.

I took it to a friend who works on laptops, hopefully they can figure out what the problem is...
