Thinkpad iSeries shuts down when connecting external monitor

I have a Thinkpad i1400 that shuts down when I connect an external monitor and it won't restart unless I unplug it or remove the battery.

Do I have to configure something before being able to connect a monitor?

By the way, I'm running Win XP.
