HI,
I have a Thinkpad 600 basic I bought new several years ago. It is running perfectly fine. I need to upgrade the 6 GO Drive. Does anybody know if there is some limitation with the capacity.
I found 2 drives:
Hitachi Travelstar 40GN - 40 Go 2"1/2 4200 RPM 2 Mo IDE (bulk)

Hitachi Travelstar 5K80 - 40 Go 2"1/2 5400 RPM
But perhaps there is better choice.

I can add that I have a generic battery 3600 ma and another 4400 ma from refill.com. Which makes a good 5 hours travel time.

thanks for advice.

With latest bios I believe the 600 series will go 80GB without issue.

You can certainly use a 40GB; however, you will need the latest BIOS before you can put it in, otherwise you will get a disk error.

Dont buy anything lower than 5400 rpm. 8mb cache.

7200 rpm is probably a bit overkill. But the Hitachi 60gb 7200.8 begins to be cheap now.

No travelstar available at shopping center. I bought a toshiba 5200 rpm 40 GO. It works fine and there is an incredible gap in performance. Partly due to windows 2000 reinstall but also due to drive rperformance.Yhanks for help..

Jald, you'll find that WinXP will perform a bit better than 2000 on the 600. I run it on a 600E that I orignally put Win98SE on. It takes slightly longer to boot into WinXP, but after boot the computer is MUCH faster!

Thanks for xp but now I found that my 600 suppots 164 M of RAM and not the 2nd extension of 128M. Sometimes it runs 228M and sometimes not! I read all the threads about ram. I am not convinced there is a solution.

Also the ram test with the basic 32M RAM is endless. Perhaps there is a hard bug on my machine!
So I w'nt try now xp prof edition on my machine.
But many thanks
Jack
