HI

I have a thinkpad 570E. When i used to start the laptop, the screen used get whitish unitil i move it few times up and down and it clears up. Few days back the video cable gave smoke and some cracks as well. I changed the video cable and inverter too, but now the screen is all black, and if one tries, he can see the windows and boot setup, but it is way too dim that it almost looks as if nothing is bieng displayed. The slider for brightness makes no effect. Is the screen blown out, should it be changed or is it something else. Please help in this regard..

If smoke came out, something blew up.

It could be your inverter, which is cheap, but if you replace it, and your cables are still bad, you will blow the new one too.

It could be the backlight, which is a royal pain to replace by itself, or expensive and easy if you replace the whole display.

i replaced the inverter with the cable too. but the display is realy dim, hardly seeable.. so i should change the whole screen???by the way when i plug in a monitor to my laptop, the display is OK...

need your suggestion....

If the display is really dim, your backlight is not lighting.

That could be because your "new" inverter is bad, or because the backlight is bad.

It is possible to replace just the CCFL backlight, but it is tedious, and if you're not handy doing electronics repair, it's not the easiest job to do for your first try.

See if your HMM tells you how to test the inverter.

Replacing the screen will be cheaper than hiring someone to replace the CCFL. See the link in the 600 section to a weblog about someone who did replace the CCFL in his 600 series.

Gibbs' first rule of troubleshooting - "The first thing to suspect is the last thing you messed with."

The backlight was working before you replaced the inverter and cable.

Now after replacing the inverter and cable it doesn't work.

So either the new inverter is bad, or not installed correctly, or the cable is not fully seated.
