760 XD doesn't boot

#1 Post by www_sempremeglio_it » Mon Oct 03, 2005 9:45 am

Hello everybody!

I own a 760 XD with external floppy and internal CDROM. The laptop boots the hard disk, but no other!
If I insert a CDROM in the CDROM drive, the laptop boots its hard disk.
How can I access its BIOS?

If I insert a floppy-disk in its floppy-drive, the system understands if the floppy-disk is bootable or not but the problems are:
* if I insert the "Windows 98 recovery floppy disk", the system shows: "Disk I/O error, replace the disk".
* if I insert a Linux bootable disk, the system shows: "Boot failed".

Can somebody help me?

Thanks

For accessing the CMOS, see Question #17 in the FAQ: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1689

Excuse me

Ok, so I can enter the CMOS. When I do the hardware test of floppy, no progress bar appears, nothing appears :-( I suppose the floppy-drive doesn't work.
But when I put a floppy inside it, it understands if the flloppy is bootable or not!

The "FDD-1" in the upper area of the test screen is for an internal floppy drive. The "FDD-2" in the lower, boxed off area of the test screen is for the external floppy drive.

Do you know where I can download a boot floppy-image specific for my model?
Win98 recovery disk doesn't work!

You can try here to download a simple boot disk, for the OS of your choice:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

It doesn't have to be model specific.

Note: I would recomment the 98SE OEM.

Thanks a lot for your powerful link but my Thinkpads doesn't boot from floppy :-((((

Is there a method to boot from CDROM? The BIOS seems to allow only boot from floppy or HD.

Unfortunatley, no. The 760 series will boot from PCMCIA, network, floppy and HD but not from the internal cd-rom.

Is your floppy internal or external?

If it is external, then you need to go into the setup (BIOS) and change the boot order to start with FDD-2, then hard drive.

If it is currently set to FDD-1, and the boot disk is in an external floppy, then it won't boot from it.

It's external and I used FDD2 as you tell me...but nothing.

Maybe boot from PCMCIA or from Network can be a solution...but what can I boot from them? Can I install Windows or Linux from PCMCIA or network?

Thanks for all your help!

If I'm not mistaken, you can setup the 760 to use PCMCIA or network for bootup by holding down F1 as you power on the computer and keep it held down until you are at the ThinkPad Easy Setup screen.

From there, there should be a button for bootup or startup; click that. In the window that comes up you should be able to set the boot priorities on the computer.
